And now begins the recap of the end of Gunvolt 2, which makes things...a little easier for me to plan.

USS Volador and the ASROC
In August 1960, USS Volador (SS-490) was assigned to participate in testing of the US Navy’s new ASROC Mk-44 torpedo system. As part of the test program, the guided missile destroyer USS King (DGL-10) had ASROC launcher systems installed. Volador would play the part of target in order to try out the new system.
With Volador at periscope depth and being tracked by King’s SQS-23B sonar, the destroyer fired an ASROC. The Mk-44 torpedo separated from the rocket motor at the appropriate point and speared into Volador’s sail, piercing the thin plating there and becoming lodged. No other damage to the submarine was done.
However, it was deemed had the ASROC shot been for real, it would have failed to provide a kill, as the torpedo struck Volador too soon after entering the water for it to complete its “enabling run” and arm itself. King’s fire control party had failed to enter the appropriate enabling run distance prior to launching the ASROC. Despite this, the Navy used the above photos to tout the lethality of the new system. No mention was made of the fire control party’s error.
