Backstory

Yolana is a beautiful Edenian woman who is also a distant relative, perhaps a cousin, to Tanya. Her exact age is unknown, but it is known that her age exceeds 15,000 years, making her possibly older than Kitana and Tanya. Not much is known about her, apparently even to Tanya, whom she helped train in the dark arts. She is a very powerful sorceress and has mastered many forms of sorcery and elemental magic.

Yolana accurately predicted Shao Kahn's takeover of Edenia and considered fleeing Edenia. However, wanting to perfect her knowledge in the supernatural and the occult, she simply fled to the outskirts of Edenia and led a very subdued, quiet life. She eventually returned to Edenia briefly thousands of years later, reunited with her extended family member Tanya, and proceeded to briefly train Tanya in both the dark arts and martial arts. It is unknown what happened between the time of her fleeing and the time of her return to the Edenian mainland.

Yolana would eventually leave Edenian again for unknown reasons (although it's strongly suspected to be because of treason), where she would then reside in Earthrealm disguised as an old woman. Years would pass before she would rescue a young boy (Vergil "Val" Briggs) from a forest fire. She noticed the fire not far from her home. After investigating, she noticed the young boy trapped under a collapsed and burning tree. Although initially apathetic to the boy's suffering and turning around to return to her home, she suddenly sensed the great magical presence residing in him as he cried out in pain. She quelled the fire using her elemental abilities before turning her attention to Val. The boy was fatally burned and mutilated, but she restored him to his previous state.  

The young Val felt indebted to her and asked how he could ever repay her. She informed him of his latent magical potential and mentioned that he could repay her by allowing her to pass her knowledge to him. The boy reluctantly agreed. Years would pass as he'd secretly visit her. He eventually became adept in sorcery, shadow magic, divination, and various martial arts.

Personality

Yolana is a very enigmatic woman. She shares Tanya's feelings of self-preservation and is willing to do almost anything to survive. However, she does have a haughty spirit which led to her acquiring an immense amount of power to greatly minimize the chances of anything threatening her survival. Yolana is a very serious and calm, yet sarcastic woman. She doesn't think very highly of many of her fellow Edenians, and her conversations with them are drenched in deadpan sarcasm (especially with Kitana), outright contempt, and subdued insults. She is also very dismissive of ones that she views are "irrelevant" or have no use to her or her goals (as evidenced with her interactions with Jacqui Briggs, Takeda, Kung Jin, and Erron Black). She is also very aware of how powerful she is and is also dismissive of characters who would be considered extremely dangerous (she's extremely dismissive of Liu Kang, doesn't seem to be that impressed with Kotal Kahn, and openly mocks Raiden without fear of any consequences). She isn't easily angered and manages to keep a calm demeanor even in the most dangerous of situations.  Yolana is ambiguously evil, having an evil and manipulative demeanor, but not outright doing anything that causes direct harm to the series' heroes (she even helps them on occasion, if only because of their connection to Val). Her endgame and goals are unknown, and it mostly seems that most of her actions are merely for her own amusement since she seems confident enough in her own power and believes that there is no real threat to her survival (save Shinnok). She may be more ambitious than she leads everyone to believe, however.

Fighting ability and special skills

Yolana is an extremely powerful sorceress, mastering nearly all forms of elemental magic and being highly adept at black magic/the dark arts, divination, sorcery, and dimensional magic. Between the period of her first leave of Edenian and her return to the mainland, her power grew to extreme degrees. She's noticeably more powerful than a fully-powered Quan Chi and is *vastly* more powerful than he is in the Mortal Kombat X story. She is also a master of many martial arts and is very deadly when wielding her signature pair of kusarigama. While she prefers not to fight and to instead use her wits to outsmart her enemies (again, mainly for her amusement and ego), both Val and Raiden suspect that, at her full strength, she is possibly as powerful (or even more powerful) than Shao Kahn himself. Despite not preferring to fight, she does, however, enjoy it (making her a mild example of a blood knight). To make things more interesting and "fair," she wears an ornate headband to limit both her magical abilities and her fighting strength (similar to Oro's wrapped up arm in Street Fighter 3).
