he WOULD be! can’t help but imagine a mic’d up goalie will in this au who’s just: (1) narrating the step by step instructions to baking chocolate banana bread, (2) singing from start to finish his favorite song of the week WITH instrumentals, and (3) giving a giggly (mostly incoherent) play by play of the Current game. the mic’d up vid gets 1M views in an hour and remains the NHL’s top video for MONTHS

back in the ntdp, will had leno so thoroughly whipped that it wasn’t even a question if leno was going to bc with him. will doesn't even waste time asking, he just assumes leno will follow him (and he’s right). instead, he turns his omega charms on gabe, batting his big blue eyes and promising to be gabe's roommate if gabe commits to bc. and gabe caves, because how can anyone resist will?? 

so they go to bc and will has his two alphas best friends wrapped around his finger. they're HIS wingers, and they’re not even mad about it. they’re so down bad for him it’s not even funny (unless you’re will, who thinks it’s hilarious and probably makes leno and gabe do dumb competitions to win the privilege of being his casual heat partner). mack is more of an afterthought to will at this point other than being his rival team’s star player and an alpha, but will probably tries to rile mack up at every face off by tipping his head to the side and exposing his scent glands because he’s a little shit

and then will ditches the bc line for mack and the sharks. it’s not intentionally cruel, will has always had his sights on the nhl and was never really looking to settle down. and why would he when he can easily get any alpha he wants?

poor mack never stood a chance

will sees quiet, standoffish mack (both because of the rivalry and because that's just how mack is and maybe because he knows will's reputation as a heartbreaker) and takes it as a challenge. he's all up in mack's space, cracking jokes and exposing his unmarked throat, rubbing up against mack on the bench, wrestling with mack in their shared hotel room. he toes the line between friendly banter and flirting like he's dancing through defensemen on the ice, and mack goes from wary and closed off to completely obsessed with will within days, following him around like a lost puppy

will is thrilled. of course he is, he’s got a first overall draft pick alpha playing beautiful hockey with him on the ice and drooling after him off it. it doesn't hurt that their off-ice chemistry is great and they quickly become best friends who spend all of their time together. so naturally will invites mack to spend his heat with him, and mack agrees

mack isn't super experienced, but his eagerness to please and ridiculous competitiveness about making it good for will more than makes up for it. and he does make it good for will: will doesn’t want for anything during his heat. will is no stranger to good sex or doting alphas, but mack is sweet and attentive and earnest and funny in that stupid, goofy way of his that’s entirely new to will, and extremely endearing, making his heart thump dangerously whenever mack kisses him

(queue the oh. oh no. moment for will)

but will is the king of keeping things casual. which is why he fucks off back to boston the minute his heat breaks. he spends time with gabe and leno and his other childhood friends in an attempt to get mack off his mind (and maybe to make mack jealous via instagram)

he doesn't see mack again until halifax

he doesn’t know what he’s expecting from mack after they haven’t seen each other in so long, but it’s not mack greeting him with a fist bump and treating will completely normally (or, well, normal for them)

will, of course, freaks out

he's completely out of his depth. he’s never felt like this about anyone before. he's never actually wanted an alpha to court/ mate him, usually it’s the opposite problem! he doesn't know how to get mack to do what he wants. and wouldn't mack make a move if he was interested in courting/ mating will??

so will turns to the only thing he knows: being a messy shit-disturber. he goes out to dinner with gabe and leno when they're in town, trying to make mack jealous. he gets even more tactile and possessive with mack: goading mack into playing keep away/ sewer/ horse/ wrestling matches as an excuse to touch him, bumping his hip or shoulder into mack’s when they’re on the bench, snuggling mack whenever they’re alone, stealing mack’s clothes for his nest, letting his fingers graze mack’s unmarked scent gland…

mack remains unaffected. will is starting to get discouraged

until he gets hit during the pens game

he’s high on meds and in a lot of pain watching the replay of mack losing it on wotherspoon, giddy with glee. his alpha defended him! staked a public claim on him!! how romantic!!! 

but then mack says in the post-game interview that he'd do it for anyone on the team and will throws up his one good arm in defeat

meanwhile mack is sitting in his stall sweating profusely even though the game is already over

mack has been telling so many lies lately: that that he's cool with will meeting up with other alphas and doesn't feel jealous about it at all, that his breath doesn’t catch every time will walks into the room, that his heart doesn’t go gooey when will cuddles up to him all soft and sleepy, that he doesn’t want to sink his fingers into will’s pretty blond curls and tug will’s head back to expose the line of throat and sink his teeth in so everyone knows who will belongs to, that he doesn’t want to be more than friends and the occasional heat partner

mack is trying so, so hard not to be the stereotypical possessive alpha that can't be just friends with an omega. will told him the heat stuff was casual, it’s not his fault that mack can’t keep it together

mack is a good canadian boy. he was raised right. he’s not going to make his feelings will’s problem. the fight was a slip up, yeah, but overall he's doing a pretty okay job at not bleeding his mushy feelings about will all over everything

(cut to will screaming into a pillow like "why is this so hard?! what more do i have to do to get this stupid alpha to court me?!!")

the miscommunication trope in that kind of setting is so funny. will pulling out all his tricks and coming onto mack in all of his roundabout ways and mack just doesn’t get it. mack staying respectful (he’s SHAKING head to toe from holding back) when will wants nothing more but for mack to disrespect him nasty style

and while macklin’s feeling like absolute shit after drinking too much (he didn’t really, he’s just lightweight as fuck), his will to push through the entire car ride is rewarded when will is praising him so nicely as he eats his warm soup Very Well. and really there is nothing better than will’s delicate fingers running through his hair as he murmurs to macklin with his sweet voice. nothing better when he’s all done eating and they’re in will’s bed and mack gets to kiss his pretty nape good night and gets to bury his nose in golden curls as will rubs his tummyache away. he even gets a kiss on each cheek. and then on his forehead. and on his mouth. and everywhere on his face will’s lips can reach. mack loses count at 8. already a pretty good number for him. he keeps getting kisses every other minute—

the cherny/leno comparisons… i’ve been saying this since will was in IR! people were tensionposting about chernywill but i was there wanting people to consider what having a familiar leno-shaped linemate can do to will. finally getting to see it is everything to me, these chernywill beginnings are so good!!!
