It has been before, it's just that every time there's a good videogame movie people pretend it didn't exist as soon as a new one gets anounced. At least the success of this one will make people keep an open mind about the Sonic Movie
When most people talk about the Videogame Movie Curse they refer to Hollywood Big Budget Live Action movies, like Rampage and Uwe Boll movies. Not Japanese Live action movies like Phoenix Wright or animated ones like Animal Crossing. The curse refers to the idea that big companies like Legendary and Paramount have no care for the source material and will destroy it just to milk a few bucks.
The fact that Pokemon Detective Pikachu is not only passable but FANTASTIC is huge because either
A) It proved that there are people within large companies (in this case Warner Bros) who truly do care about maintaining the mood and tone of the source material and will work with fans to make a good product, which is great,
B) Pokemon is so amazing and beloved that even the corporate will cannot harm it.
And having an “Open Mind” and “Blatantly Ignoring What’s Clearly Red Flags” are two different things if we’re gonna talk about Paramount’s Sonic here.
That isn’t to say that there’s a ZERO percent possibility of the movie being good. But the trailer had so many red flags, SO many instances that just scream “WE DON’T CARE ABOUT THE SOURCE MATERIAL” that to judge fans for being disappointed and angry is a disservice. The point of movie trailers is to let you decide whether or not you want to watch said movie. And the people who have made said decision are not to blame.
