I understand you are inspired with iron curtains from real history- do you have a specific era you draw from the most, and do you have any recommendations for readings about that history? I haven’t done as much reading into english-Spanish history especially , so I am very curious!
Thank you and keep up the great work, I love seeing your stuff on my feed!
aww thank you very much!! i'm happy you like it and that it inspires you to take up some reading for yourself :]
since i'm trying to be a bit more comfortable talking about my ocs, i'm trying to specify which events exactly i'm referencing in specific drawings. it's not perfect, as i'm pretty shy and have trouble sharing things :_)
a lot of stuff you see with johnny and aurelio that i do is from the 1500s when the debacle between henry viii and the eventual anglo-spanish war took place (those events are heavily related yes). more recently, i've been drawing johnny in more modern times – for example, the most recent animatic i did, the hate monologue, takes place in the 19th century, although it's not related to any specific event – hs clothing is more modern and he behaves more "maturely" so to say
a lot of stuff i pick up from general reading that you can find in e-libraries like the internet archive, anna's archive or academia dot edu – obviously, i mostly interest myself in whatever's related to england, since that's my favourite topic. some reading is in other languages that i know though, so you might have to use translators for those
some things i personally read, enjoyed and can recommend:
~ "that sweet enemy. britain and france: the history of a love-hate relationship" by robert and isabelle tombs (book)
~ "the boer war" by thomas pakenham (book)
~ "the west end front" by matthew sweet (book)
~ "how to be a tudor" and "how to be a victorian" by ruth goodman (books)
~ "marriage and sexuality in medieval and early modern iberia" published by routledge and edited by eukene lacarra lanz (book)
~ "сакура и дуб" by всеволод овчинников (book)
~ "datos para la historia de las relaciones hispano-inglesas" by josé a. muñoz rojas (article)
~ "a fine romance: anglo-spanish relations in the sixteenth century" by alexander samson (article)
i have read more but i unfortunately can't recommend everything i read for various reasons. i hope you like whatever you decide to read though
thank you for the ask!! plugging in to say that feel free to send asks i feel like answering those hehe
