i do find johnny and ferris to be a bit more sentimental to me than johnny and duncan (test name bear with me he might not even end up as a duncan in the future) because wales has been with england way closer for way longer than anyone else and i think his personality lends itself to being harder to process for england's thorny and rigid self
ferris still gets the i have no mouth and i must scream treatment but he despite everything keeps meeting johnny halfway and somewhat trying to not bother him. not in the "i can fix him" way but rather "let's not escalate this" way. i do think it stumps johnny enough in most cases. johnny doesn't want to feel as the bad guy when he does something bad to a person who does nothing about it, it's way easier with people who are openly hostile to him so he can justify his own hostility. england's usual m/o is that he's not bad either because they deserved what he did, or they started first, or they should've been better, stronger, smarter, and he just did what he had to to keep up with the times and it's them who need to do better and he's definitely not in the wrong here. ferris though is normally undisturbed and non-confrontational. it's hard to justify using a person as a scratching post when that person is doing pretty much nothing neither before nor after. ferris will catch some if the frustration builds and bubbles up, and sometimes he's mad at ferris for specific ferris-related reasons (not that they're justified or good reasons), but otherwise it's easier to find someone else to bother
it kind of confuses people a little bit as to why johnny in like xix is pretty different behaviour-wise from how i usually draw him in let's say xvi
maybe i should make a chart about that
I understand you are inspired with iron curtains from real history- do you have a specific era you draw from the most, and do you have any recommendations for readings about that history? I haven’t done as much reading into english-Spanish history especially , so I am very curious!

since i'm trying to be a bit more comfortable talking about my ocs, i'm trying to specify which events exactly i'm referencing in specific drawings. it's not perfect, as i'm pretty shy and have trouble sharing things :_)
a lot of stuff you see with johnny and aurelio that i do is from the 1500s when the debacle between henry viii and the eventual anglo-spanish war took place (those events are heavily related yes). more recently, i've been drawing johnny in more modern times – for example, the most recent animatic i did, the hate monologue, takes place in the 19th century, although it's not related to any specific event – hs clothing is more modern and he behaves more "maturely" so to say
a lot of stuff i pick up from general reading that you can find in e-libraries like the internet archive, anna's archive or academia dot edu – obviously, i mostly interest myself in whatever's related to england, since that's my favourite topic. some reading is in other languages that i know though, so you might have to use translators for those

i definitely should do more digital paintings since they're personally very satisfying for me, but at the same time they kind of take the wind out of me for a while
not to mention the constant issue i face of "my paintings look good but they lack character, my comics tell a story but they don't look good". issues 💔
watching bits and pieces of dracula: a comedy of terrors and can't get over how much they remind me of engspa.........need to draw later
i really like john's clothing that he usually wears in the court, but i feel like i need to draw him in armor more since he used to dabble in chivalry when he was younger (and then discovered he thinks it's gross and makes him exhausted and just did archery instead lol). i think he'd look cute in armor 💔 little steadfast tin soldier
