#ask bobbin

Hey folks! I have been thinking about this for a long time, and I've decided to finally dive in and do it! Introducing something new to the blog: Ask Bobbin!

If you have any questions for Bobbin about anything within her world, she will answer them via text post or audio recording! It's entirely dependent on what I have time for/if I have access to my microphone. My goal is use this as practice for my voice acting.

A couple of ground rules before we start:

Questions must be sent to my askbox.

Keep it Safe for Work. Bobbin is a minor, and I generally want my blog to be a friendly space.

Yes you can poke and her and cause a little trouble. (Asking about Yin Yarn or the Master Crown are easy ways to rile her up.)

I am not obligated to answer every ask. If it makes me uncomfortable, I won't answer it.

For those of you who are new here, here's what you should know about Bobbin:

Bobbin is the teenage niece of Yin Yarn from Kirby's Epic Yarn. Her mother is Spinstra, the Head Witch and Healer of Patchland.

She is currently dating Prince Fluff and has been going on adventures with him for the past two years.

She is a mage in training that is actively studying the Metamortex (the in-game power up gimmick that turns Kirby and Fluff into tanks, trains, etc.).

Bobbin is an Arachknit: part arachnid, part demonbeast, all yarn.

Her lore encompasses both anime and game elements.

She's friends with Tiff, Tuff, and Knuckle Joe, a couple years after the events of Kirby Right Back At Ya (meaning they are teenagers. Kirby is about five years old ish?).

Meta Knight is one of her mentors.

She knows Magolor and helped to repair the Lor! She also joined him for the events of Magolor Epilogue and has had to deal with the Master Crown three times. All of them sucked!

She knows other royals in the Kirby universe thanks to her connections with Fluff. These include Queen Sectonia (and Mage Taranza), King Phanta, Queen Ribbon, King Dedede, and of course, King and Queen Organza of Patchland.

Hey Bobbin! What kind of books do you like?

Bobbin: More like what books DON'T I like? I LOVE books!

Obviously I have to read a lot of nonfiction. Those magic tomes aren't gonna memorize themselves! But when I'm not learning new spells or studying new fiber art techniques, I love a good story. Adventure and fantasy books are my favorites, though I've been known to dabble in a little horror and mystery from time to time.

My absolute favorite is "The Adventures of Sir Urchin" series. It's about a brave star warrior, Sir Urchin, and his companion, the wise Simirror, Mage Mirai Metaphora, and all their adventures throughout the galaxy to preserve peace and justice. Metaphora is like half the reason I wanted to become a mage. She's so incredible and clever and brave - I wanna be just like her when I'm all grown up. Personally, book four is my favorite, where they go undercover to a masquerade ball??? I spent AGES remaking her ballgown, I wore it last Halloween actually! It's so pretty.

But back to you: you're running a theme park these days? Oh my gosh, that's swell! I'm so happy for you! Glad you got to achieve your dreams! I suppose I might be willing to come up with something, assuming you'd be willing to, oh I dunno, teach me a spell or two? Heehee.~

Oooooh, that's TOUGH! Fluff and I have done so many things together, it's tough to narrow it down. I mean we helped repair the Lor with our friends, battled against Fangora- oh, there was that one visit to the Dream Kingdom too, that was fun. I got to introduce him and Joe to my friend Truffelor, the chocolate wizard.

I think, if we wanna be specific about stuff between the two of us? There was this one time we went to Snow Land together- oh I'll never forget it.

It was beautiful. We went on a hike up to the top of the mountains. Rumor had it that there was a beautiful lake up there that got frozen super solid. Perfect spot to go ice skating! So we decided to see for ourselves. And the legends were true! It was- so tough to make it to the top, what with how little path there was to follow. But when we found it? It was so perfect. We ended up skating for hours.

Once we got back home, we stopped for hot cocoa . He's a bit of a mess. Somehow he always ends up with a mustache whenever he drinks something. (-Cutesy giggling-) But, yeah. I think that's my favorite. I know it's a bit more side-questy than the big, "save the world" stuff. But we don't have to be grand all the time to have fun.

It's true, I am in fact a mage! Or at least, I'm trying to be. If you want to get technical, mages have a lot more formal schooling than I do. I think most people would call me a witch, but like, shhh, let me have this. Mage Bobble sounds WAY better!

Anyways, to actually answer your question- plenty! There are so many cool magic types out there, and I wanna learn them all! I've got a pretty good grasp on the basics. Like, I can throw a fireball and tie things up like nobody's business. Stitching stuff together? It's a breeze, can't beat me on patterning.

But what I really want to is master the Metamortex. It's one of the most curious magics on my planet. You've heard of them, right? Kirby and his highness have used them many times: little rainbow vortexes that let them transform into all KINDS of things! Tankbots, trains, dolphins, you name it! I've been studying REALLY hard to recreate them, and so far I'm pretty good at all the ones that already exist. But crafting my own? Something original? That's a touch harder.

It's - kind of silly. But… you ever watched one of those magical girl animes? I'd…kinda like to have a spell like that for myself. Something that lets me have the cute, sparkly transformation AND more storage for my yarn. I'm still working out the kinks, but one day, that'll be mine! Just you wait!

I'm also trying to figure out some transmogrification. It's summertime, and as I'm sure you've noticed, it's hot out. I'd really like to visit the beach with my friends. But um…I can't swim. ^^""" I mean, maybe I could learn over in Water Land, but in Dreamland? Yeah not a chance. Being made of yarn and fabric means I get waterlogged really easily, which means I sink, and there's a risk of -gulp- mold. Eugh- oh I hate mold, so much. But recently- I heard about this yarn that's made of algae. It's supposed to be very eco-friendly. And if I could just, change my yarn type to be more like that for a couple of hours? It would solve most of my problems! Here's hoping I can get it to work!

Audio Transcript: Oh absolutely! I'm always happy to meet with other spellcasters! There's so much to learn from all of them. And frankly, it's nice to discuss with someone who gets it, y'know?

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Gryll in my world yet. But I've heard many legends. I mean you gotta be REALLY AWESOME to get a title like theirs. The Puzzle Witch, Stacker of the Stars? That sounds SO KNIT! I wonder if they'd be into tea sometime.

Magolor, I do know. We've- actually adventured together a couple times now! Ask me about Another Dimension sometime, oh do I have stories, haha. ^^"" Ah- He's a very impressive mage for sure. He's taught me a few tricks too.~ The needle spike maneuver is VERY handy. I should really check in on him. We haven't seen each other since he moved over to the Dream Kingdom. I wonder how he and Truffelor are doing.

So far there's only one spellcaster I've met that I haven't gotten along with, come to think of it. You ever met Floralia's head mage? That guy needs to learn some manners. He's such a snob.

Oh this is a GREAT question! So, yarn texture DOES affect your spellcraft, but probably not in the way you'd expect. Like- oh my gosh I think I need to write this down. Otherwise it's not gonna be coherent in the slightest.

For starters, I can cast with just about any yarn at my disposal. It's more a matter of making sure it's enchanted. And that's like, super easy, just gotta get it on the same frequency as my magic, bathe it in there for a bit, and we're all good. Any yarn can work for any spell, but some of them have properties that really come in handy for specific magecraft.

Like, say you want to cast something that keeps you warm. Fire magic, heat enchantment for going out in the snow, etc? You want something like wool for that. It's a good insulator, and it's very breathable (very important for the fire triangle).

If you want to cast a spell that's soothing and gentle, like say, something to help you sleep? I'm gonna recommend something like mohair or alpaca fiber. That's wicked soft, and dreams stick to it better.

For the sake of keeping it simple, I tend to roll with synthetic fibers, namely acrylic yarn. Just because it's what I have on hand. It comes in a lot of colors, it's fairly good at handling heat, and frankly, there's just a lot of it on Patchland. I don't think I have a least favorite, they're all pretty good in my book. Though, nylon can get a touch stringy for my liking.

I'd love to try my hand at working with more though. There's some really fluffy rabbits out there that have the SOFTEST fur, and I'd love to like, try and spin that for myself someday, see how it casts. I wonder if any of my furry friends would let me try that with their fur. Hmm....something to think about later.

That said, there are some things to be cautious of. Yarn- kinda has a memory to it? So like- I've gotten a couple different yarn bundles from my friends off-planet, and I gotta tell ya: you HAVE to be careful about where your yarn comes from. There's this arachnid tailor that was visiting for Fluff's last birthday ball, Manny I think his name was? Traded me some yarn from Shiver Star. It was a really nice fiber, but when I went to use it for spellcraft- I got turned human-ish! And that metamortex was tight, it took a lot of work to unravel.

And that's when I learned the hard way: yarn retains the essence of the people and places it comes from. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. Yarn is an art tool, art carries a piece of its creator with it. The same thing would happen if someone used yarn I spun for their spells, they'd have some of my essence shining through in their work. It's, kind of beautiful, honestly. It connects us across the world: we all sort of influence each other, help one another without even knowing it sometimes.

Y'know, I don't actually know! Maybe I should consult the Royal Archives on that one. Like, as far as I know, it doesn't. Your fire spell is still gonna be fiery and great, even if it's not made of red yarn. But I do think color influences how you think about it. Maybe more confidence in your spells?

I think, it's more important that your spells have color at all. On days where my colors are muted, I've noticed my spell crafting isn't nearly as strong. Dulled colors are usually a sign of low magic energy over here. I don't get like that too often, but…I used to, a lot more…
