On Death's Shores
"Thanatos will not come for you. Charon will not greet you. The Elysian Fields and Tartarus will not receive you. Hades will not know you."
I died. Ā I stood within the cast circle of magic and my own blood then gutted my own self to bleed out upon the flooring in this vault beneath Misthaven's castle. Ā Though I am not sure the ritual worked, though the last images Absolem remembers seeing is the mess of blood, bone, and sinew collapsing into the mirror that ebbed out the demon taint. Ā I can only assumed that it worked. Ā I do know that it was not just by my hand. Ā Maric, lord of this keep and village had been down there. Ā Large, bestial.. the vestige of just how old the vampire was shown to the confines of the vaults. Had he not been there to aid with his own magical summons.. things would have been much more painful. Ā Once I have recovered.. I shall seek him out.. Ā I owe him a debt..
So, now I am confined to my own private dimension.. my sanctum.. Ā to rest, to heal.. Ā to recover before returning to Ashmourne to see what had happened. Ā Though I am not alone. Ā Orie used the charm I had given him, so he is here within my sanctum with me. Ā Wounded, but alive. Ā He is safe here, and we will care over each other during this recovery. Ā I am sure he will tell me what had happened, as I will admit to wishing to know.
Again I hope.. not to die again. Ā It is most uncomfortable...
It washes over Ashmourne..
It seems that the strand of Ashmourne, in particular the village of Misthaven and soon the Summerlands, is having a demonic issue.
Demons.. the beings that seem to be nothing more than an annoyance, and often a hindrance. Ā Regardless the strands I go to, there is always a demonic realm attached to it, and they always believe they are the only ones that matter. Ā Some demons actually herald back to what they once where before having been twisted by religious fanaticals. Ā Protectors, benevolent spirits that help and guide humans, not try to take their souls or cause mayhem.
My experiences with demons have grown, and through my times within Everwind, I have been given a ritual to seal off demonic realms. Ā I've offered to perform this ritual for the residence of Misthaven, though there will be some ..tweeks.. done. Ā It seems as if the demonic realm needs to stay connected to Ashmourne. That some of the demons aren't ..evil.. Which I am pleased to hear. Ā However, apparently something happened and this hell is trying to punch through the castle in Misthaven. Ā It's underground vaults, that is. Ā So I will have to modify this ritual to seal off this rift that is forming with out completely sealing off their hell. Ā I can do this, if allowed.
Of course this ritual needs a sacrifice. Ā One of someone who can solidify the seal. Ā That was my first modification to this ritual. Ā This sacrifice needs to be of one who can handle it, a soul that can solidify the seal. Ā Then a way to retrieve that soul when it is done and return them to their body. Ā Not every strand has someone with the capability to use such a resurrection spell. Ā That causes a problem. Ā Keeping the soul attached the seal could create a monster, a corrupted soul.. Ā So, to prevent this from being an occurrence, I made it so that I am the sacrifice. Ā Being as death is not a thing I will ever know, at least I can place my soul to some use. Ā Once done, I can free myself from the seal and return to wherever it is I wish to be. Ā
We shall see if they wish this ritual to be done..

Orie- is
This search, this errand, is perhaps a terrible idea. Why did I think I could undertake such a thing. There is a beast, come from the forrest like the black beast I have fought before, but smarter, talking, and white. He knows. He knows I found the stone, the orb of the gods hidden deep in the wilds. He knows I played the songs, though I don't know if he knows why. He came to the village and tracked me down. And I would have fought him. One of us would have killed the other. I would have probably died again. But now I want to find him. Is this power I feel part of some curse? Is Faermorne laughing at me from the beyond? I won't be anyone's hound, not for anything. I AM NOT a beast. A monster maybe, but I am not one of those things. I fear these changes I feel. I feel it all the time now, pulling, calling me to the wilds. Maybe I should go back to Esterwell. Maybe I should I DONT RUN. I stand. I STAND. I know what I believe in. And I will hold fast through the fire and through the gale. I AM Horace Lyndsay, I am the one that stands and fights.
I am the one that loves.

Orie - A horse named Necessity
I have not had much luck with my reconnaissance efforts in Esterwell. That goes without saying since the colossal failure that my mission there has become. I was relatively certain that Isabella lived in the same apartment building as me. But I never found any sign of a mallorn tree living in the building. I knew I might have better luck finding the other items from the dream, and so with help from an odd patron of the bar, I rode out to my old stomping grounds. He was happy to have the company and it was on his way, he said. I hardly had any time to see the sights, and there was hardly anything I remembered, but I was happy to find that most of the wilderness I had known as a youth was relatively untouched. When I saw Miller's barn for the first time in a few years, and then by way of my strand-travel making it something like a century, I was shocked. The metal of the round top had succumbed to oxidation in an admirable fashion, but the planking was lifeless grey. Nothing but lifeless grey, and we used to have such lively times there. I had managed to find a horse and boarding stable, thanks to the wonderful smart-phone and its internet. She is aptly named Necessity, though I'm calling her Nessy. It was a few miles ride to Miller's,Ā and then on down paved roads to what I could most nearly associate with my holler. Despite signs saying the land belonged to some corporation I couldn't discern, I rode into the wilderness and on and on until by twilight, little bluish floating spirits appeared. I took these to be willow (will-o?) wisps, since that's roughly how the internet described them. I followed them from one to another as darkness closed in, and by the light of my lantern alone, my known world within the small bubble of its light changed. When a cluster of the wisps seemed to float up and dance around me, I thanked them emphatically, and was greeted by a demifae and knew I had somehow made the passage. The demifae and I shared no common language, but I did my best to make myself understood as I greeted it. I couldn't help but feel like it was familiar with me somehow. Arriving here was bittersweet. I wasn't able to find Dyisi though I left her a scribbled letter. I miss her with a great weight that I hadn't expected. It seems like sorrow and longing are my particular burden in life. It was however a great relief to find Mysthaven had had flourished while I was away. That is a great comfort to say the least.
Orie- White Queen Revisited
I was having some stupid dream where I was splitting wood by my house. The sky was red and cloudy, and it was like the war was going on all around me. I thought I woke up, but I was still in my dream land. When I turned, there was another world to one side growing all around me into my dream. I felt awake, and suddenly dumfounded when I saw a woman, who was many women, even appearing as my beloved at one point. She seemed to resolve, and then I recognized Faermorn, my White Queen. "Corporal Horace Lyndsayā¦" She whispered
I was confused as can be. āWhat is this, and how can it be? This canāt simply be a dream.ā I paused for a moment, and moved closer. āCan it really be you, the one who made my heart to feel again?ā
She replied, āThis place is within you, Corporal. It is within everyone, if they know where to look.ā She held out her hands to me and I held them in mine. āI am everyone, everythingā¦ā She sighed.Ā āBut here and now, for this moment, I am just meā¦.because of you. As your heart sees meā¦Your destiny awaitsā¦there are many paths. A soldier without a warā¦or a warrior seeking a higher causeā¦Where does your heart lead you, Orie?ā
I was almost crying when I heard her words. "I have missed you, and thought you were gone forever. Like so many things I have had to give away to time and fate. But here you are, and you are a treasure, surely. My words fall short; I cannot compliment something so far and away from the compass of language. You are the most perfect thing I have ever beheld.ā The dream world distorted like my former dream was trying to take over.Ā āIn this place, must I still be changed? I am human, and that means something to me. I may be cursed to never see my home again, maybe never to die, but I am a man. Fate and destiny have never been my concern; I have always lived for the day. Separated from my love, death was my only wish. I am no coward, understand? And so the soldier became my means to that end. Violence was always something I abhorred, and I do still. My hands are strangely gifted to be just as mortiferous as they are productive in creation. The desire of my heart had been to love, and be loved. You sparked in me that desire once again. I would love you and have pined so in your absence. I almost wish I had put myself aside, let you change me. What would you wish from me? What would you make of my destiny?ā
She seemed more human by the time she answered. "This place is where your truest self exists, what is most central to your soul. But even here Fate will find you, whether you will it or no. Life is the gift given unconditionally to all creatures, great and smallā¦Life is change, a flow of time in the sea of all- ā¦It is up to you, to all living things, what paths to take, what choices to make, with the life given to you⦠But there are tides that ebb and flow across all Creation in which many are swept upā¦." She seemed closer now. , "I cannot tell you what your heart desires most. Only you can know the truth of itā¦The most important choice is what shall guide youā¦..Loveā¦or its lack, in your life's journey, Orieā¦" She kissed me.
I embraced her, cheek to cheek. āIf you would have me, I would follow you to the ends of the Earth, or whatever place we find ourselves. We would belong to us, and no one else and there would be no question of soldier, warrior, lover. I would be what you needed, what you wanted and all that for as long as I draw breath.ā
āI am your dream here, Orie.. Here I can be whatever you wish of me, here and now⦠To give love and give light back into your heartā¦I could show you so many things both wondrous and strange⦠We could stay here forever, you and I⦠But I am More now. To truly follow me you too would have to become More. To no longer stand still, waiting for what comes. To choose a path to fate. To step from your dream here and choose to live your life again.ā
āWhat must I do? How can I love you?ā I had a moment of doubt, recognizing her fae nature. āIf you were to love me--would you change the thing you loved? Am I somehow inadequate, undeserving as I am? Or must I change for some other purpose?ā
She answered me so sweetly. āYou are stronger than you know, Orie. You carry within you a greater potential than you realize or accept. You have lost everything but your life and your misery yet you cling to what remains, looking away from the futureā¦..The moment you stepped from the carnage of your war into the realm of the wyld, you were changed by that act whether you knew it or not. Every encounter and circumstance along your journey has brought change and the choice of what you shall do and be. Thus it has been from the moment you first drew breath and so it shall be until you loose your last. Perhaps the better question to ask would be why you were drawn from your world into mine by your own seeking heartā¦ā Then she asked me, āI Am the Life and Chaos burning in the heart of stars, the seeds of Creation itself, the Desire that quickens all things, the Wyld of All. There is love and then there is Love. To follow Me is to follow your own heart wherever it may lead you no matter how perilous or strange the paths⦠Are you brave enough to follow your heart, Orie?ā
āI have nothing but my broken soul.ā Then I realized the futility of my argument, and simply gave my answer. āI am your man. I will follow you, my heart, and damn the consequences. Tell me what your heart desires, and I will seize it directly.ā Then I kissed her. I wish upon reflection that I had never stopped kissing her. When it ended she spoke again-
āI desire for you to find what your heart has been seeking, Orieā¦..If you seek Me, gaze upon the stolen part of me that has been carried to your landā¦and if your desire is strong enough, you shall once more step into the heart of Faerieā¦Or you can seek the oldest woods instead to wander trackless by the light of the Willowisps back to the Summerlandsā¦Either way I shall await you thereā¦.ā I could see the things she described in the strangest detail, instantly knowing things about them.
Her beauty was mind boggling, maddening possibly. I donāt know how it was initiated, but we were kissing again when I realized something. āThere is a mallorn branch in Esterwell? Am I not with you now? Will-Ā Will I wake in my bed there?ā Ā Something happened. I felt a darkness and a stabbing pain in my mind. This dream world started to shake, and I threw my arms around Faermorn, unwilling to let her go. āWhen I awake I WILL come for you! I will find you or die trying! My life is yours, my love is yours, please help me find the way!ā
No more had I said this, than she gasped aloud. It was like suddenly I held a reborn, wholly real person. But things were coming unhinged in the earthquake around us. I feel a sting when I recall her words then, more human sounding that ever and with her seeming surprised by it all. "Orie, Iā¦I will live againā¦.If you find meā¦the missing parts of meā¦.I will be-ā And before she was able to finish she was torn from me, drawn away in an otherworldly torrent. But as she faded and things grew more violent sill, I saw something internally. ā the Mallorn branch in the hand of a woman I somehow knew to be named Isabella - A small red crystalline shard held by a short armored figure backlit by raging fires - A pool lit by phosphorescent colors, ghostly rippling glyphs upon a mysterious orb reflecting from cave walls-
After the images had faded and all was swallowed up in blackness, I shot awake. I wrote down all I could remember, and now have recorded it here with the added details of my continued hindsight.
I have seen the woman, Isabella. That is the name she uses here as well, and she lives in my building with a dark haired man and at least one child that I have met on the street. I have observed them in no great detail. The stone and accompanying figure I believe to be Galyanna with the stone she retrieved from the sea monster. The pool I have never seen, but I imagine it to be somewhere in the Summerlands.
I am determined to gather the two items and take them to the pool from the vision, or die trying.
Orie- Esterwell, torn
I try to avoid thinking about what happened with the watchers. If the fae hadnāt torn Ashmourne apart themselves, what they warned may have been much worse. I canāt understand why they expected my help. Yes I am human, but there are others to choose from who would probably have been more willing. They seemed to know so much about me, and about Ashmourne, and about what was in the works in the kingdoms of Heaven and Hell. Yet they could not tell me how it came to be that I should have found myself in Ashmourne. The cosmic accident theory, as undefined as it may be, still rings as the most likely of explanations. I donāt remember what it looked like when they would call me to meet with them. The one time I was unconscious, and another I had been sleeping. But I remember what it looked like that night in the Argonne. It was nothing like a portal. I was swallowed up in a shimmering light that seemed to fade around the edges. It was not bright like lightning. Rather it was silvery, like a fish glinting in the sun as it fights just below the surface on a line. It grew in intensity so suddenly until I closed my eyes, without a sound. And when I opened them, there it was, Ashmourne. I have often wondered if their power, and whatever power took me to Ashmourne were similar. The watchers had the strangest place. Not anything like the temple in Hell. Nor anything one would expect of Heaven. They had strange and wonderous machines of all sizes and orientations. They carried what seemed to be the most elegant of weapons and staves, but I could not tell if they were for melee or could fire projectiles, or possibly something far stranger. Some of them appeared elegant, like I assume other angels would appear. A couple weeks ago I bumped into a being that was no doubt some type of angel. She was beautiful in every way, and far too perfect in form and complexion to be human. She may have appeared otherwise to others, but I saw these things and called her out immediately. She seemed put off by this and left in a hurry. I have not seen her since, nor do I know her name, but after she left I was thinking about Vedis. I miss Vedis in a strange way that I never would have imagined. Though I do miss the white queen more by a sight. I feel discomforted by what befell her. It may have been the angel's spotless beauty that reminded me of Vedis. I had to guard myself in a similar way at first, but after we we started to talk I didn't feel carnal. Instead I found myself bolstered by her presence, like I was in the company of the most harmless thing in the world. Mysthaven and it's struggle are constantly on my mind. The strange presence of the crows worries me immensely. They had started to congregate just a day or so before I left, and I knew it had to be that morrigan bitch. I just hope Nate is up to the task of keeping everyone safe. No reasoning or justification can ease the press of guilt I feel. Damn this situation.
