Memory.
Always something Yoko struggled with, and yet, something she could never quite escape. Unreliable though she knew her memory to be, it was all she had left of Alyssa, now; distant memories of a city in ruin, a nightmare in which Alyssa provided refuge, and scattered contact thereafter. One thing she remembered well was that feeling, during the outbreak, of being lost and alone in a world gone mad. A feeling, she believed, Grace probably understood all too well, now.
This was one core reason she'd come, today. Of course, loyalty to Alyssa was the primary factor. After everything Alyssa had done for her, she couldn't, and wouldn't just leave Grace by her lonesome. The idea of having to deal with such a major loss, alone...a painful thought shunted to the back of her mind, along with those lingering memories of Raccoon City. It was over, anyway. Umbrella was dust. Or so she thought. She'd been one of the loudest voices in the courts, testifying against the pharmaceutical company. She had seen it undone.
But now, it all came rushing back. Those memories, fractured though many were, of Raccoon City. Of the worst night of her life, a seemingly inescapable nightmare. Alyssa's death brought it all back, front and center, and though Yoko knew Alyssa would be the first to tell her to buck up and stop crying - it was easier said than done. Alyssa was her best friend. When she'd received the news about her death, she'd cried for over an hour. Now it was dulling. Now, it was replaced by a singular drive, a sole determination: help her daughter, whatever it took. Whatever she could do, whatever Grace asked.
She knew Kevin had gotten the news too. He'd called her the day before she set out - already knew she was going. A week had passed since Alyssa's death, and he'd asked if Yoko wanted a 'good old RPD escort' - humor in his tone masking what she could only assume was regret. He and Alyssa weren't on great terms, they disagreed on a lot, though he'd never spoken ill of her around Yoko, and always stood ready to help if she called on him. She'd turned down his escort, but advised he should reach out privately, to see if he could help as well.
Yoko's arrival in Wrenwood was a quiet one. There was no grand reunion with her friends from Raccoon. As she walked the streets, she wondered what Alyssa thought of this place. Why she had come here. There was so much, she realized now, that she didn't know about her friend. So much she should have asked while she had the chance. But that time was over, now. She knew what she had to do.
Knocking thrice on the door, she waited, unsure if she'd even get an answer. It was a hotel room she was told authorities had Grace staying in for the time being; she wasn't certain if that was good information. It was possible Grace wasn't even there. If that was the case, she'd just have to talk to local authorities, and find her. She hadn't exactly announced her visit.
