Would you ever consider examining a work about non-western vampires? As a guy from Singapore, we were surrounded by media about jiangshi (Chinese vampires, e.g. Mr Vampire, 1985) and pontianak (Malay vampires, e.g. Sumpah Pontianak, 1958). Or is your plate already too loaded with western vampire media?
It’s not that my plate is loaded, it’s that I suppose I don’t feel properly equipped to talk about cultures other than those I’m familiar with. I could critique the stories on their literary merit, but I don’t think I could competently analyze their impact on or reflection of non-western society. My firsthand knowledge of east Asian culture is limited to 3 years of high school Japanese and a 2 week tour of China. I have discussed manga and anime on my show, but mostly in terms of how it was received by a western audience. So if the media in question hasn’t “made it” to the west, I’m probably not the best person to examine it. Of course, I’m sure I could manage to dig into it if I did my homework and research on really studying and understanding the culture that produced it. But as my time is so limited for making videos, it wouldn’t be the most responsible choice for me to undertake right now.Â
tl;dr I’m not entirely opposed to it, but I have no near-future plans for it.Â
