arya is a constant reminder that, even though their days of existing in the natural world are gone, there is still a seed of nature  –  of animal  –  inside of all of them, and that grendel doesn’t have to be ashamed of that.  they help him remember his roots whilst also staying in touch with his fragile, relatively new grasp on humanity.  arya inspires him to find a middle ground  –  to not sway too strongly towards either  ‘man’  or  ‘beast,’  but to embrace them both equally;  to understand that he was still part human even when he lived as an animal, and to understand that he will always be part animal even whilst living among humans.  it isn’t always a happy medium, but they have a way of making him feel more comfortable with it and, for that, he’ll always be grateful.

they’re a calming presence, partially on account of their femininity.  he does not feel threatened by arya, but acknowledges their dangerous potential all the same;  his loyalty to them as a friend comes from a place of mutual respect between the two of them, an inherent knowledge of who and what they both are, their true power, their true capabilities, the damage they could do to other living things  …  and the conscious decision to use that massive potential to love and protect one another, instead.

he’s got their back, and he knows they’ve got his.  violence isn’t sought out  –  he’s content to gossip and share a drink  –  but if it came down to it, gren would stick someone in the throat with the jagged end of a broken bottle so long as it was in arya’s defense;  not because he feels obligated, or because he thinks they can’t defend themselves, but because gren would legitimately rather take the blow, himself, than allow harm to come unto someone he cares about.  and he does care about them.  immensely.

their relationship is undefinable;  grendel doesn’t care to slap much of a label onto it.  sometimes he feels paternal and protective over them;  sometimes he views them as a sibling;  sometimes he views them as a mother figure.  other times, whatever exists between them is not necessarily familial, but is wholesome, still, in the way that only true, undefinable love can be.

arya is one of the few people grendel feels comfortable, for the most part, being physically affectionate with.  he doesn’t live in fear of judgement around them, and knows they won’t take advantage of the vulnerability that comes with intimacy.  finding them with his arm looped around their waist or their head on his shoulder isn’t uncommon at all.

        She slowly raised herself, her gaze fixated on the dozens of bodies on the ground -- but all who were human once. Not the white walkers, no, they had dispersed the moment she pushed her dagger into the Night King. That’s when the thought hit her -- she had shut blue eyes forever. Her gaze found Brann’s and he remained silent. As if he knew that this would happen. Had he known? The bodies of those that once were, now lay down lifeless. Not a movement in sight, implying the obvious. That death had taken them. Arya rushed over to Brann, checking to make sure he was alright. His stoic impression was something, but he was well and had been untouched. She didn’t know what to do, to leave him here or to take him inside where nothing but bodies surrounded the castle. 

“Wait here.” she decided; It seemed much safer than to be rushed inside among the living -- if there were any, and the dead. Arya ran into the castle, eyes trained on all the bodies that lay lifelessly on the floor. Her thought was to get to Sansa, to be sure that she and the ones that were in the crypt with her were safe, but as she passed by, she noticed a body laying lifelessly on the floor. He eerily resembled the bull-headed boy she grew fond of. The bull-headed boy she loved, and her heart sank. Her footsteps carried her towards the body now, her breath held in her throat until she reached the body. It was not him. But that did not mean Gendry was still alive;

Men were shouting in the front, and her thought was to get out there. To make sure the threat was gone for sure. She ran outside to find piles and piles of bodies mounted on each other. Her eyes roamed the area to see if she could find more than the ones she was seeing. There were too many dead people and her heart sank. Jon? Gendry? What the hell happened to the Queen? The Dragons? A lot was swirling around in her head until she heard his voice. 

She rises slowly, all while reality resonated within her. She had done it -- She had shut blue eyes for good. Hard breathing on her end as she watched the bodies that lay on the floor were of people. Those that stayed behind to protect Brann.

Brann, as stoic as ever, watched her and she couldn’t help but feel relieved that he was well and alive. The Greyjoys had done well, and that’s when her eyes fell on Theon who had been wounded badly. But his sister was at his side instantly. They were the only ones breathing; Her heart was pounding at the thought that the entire castle was filled with the dead. Those she knew, those she knew of, those she never had the chance to even meet.

Slowly making her way to the Greyjoy, Arya lowered her dagger before kneeling beside Theon. “Will he be alright?” there had been too much blood, but at this point she wasn’t sure which was his. “Quick, let’s get him back inside, we can round all those that are injured to pull them from the dead.”
