Juliet Rylance and Matthew Rhys in Perry Mason (HBO 2020)  HBO and the Downeys gave us the origin story we didn't know we needed. I love this show. It is a film noir at it's best. It starts in 1932 Los Angeles in a low lit room with a sadistic violence to something so pure and of course, all roads lead to despair and corruption on high. As well as a stoic and almost compulsory agreement with darkness.  I watched the original series as reruns as a kid. Okay, sure, I was a weird kid, Robert Mitchum was my idol and all the other kids liked the Six Million Dollar Man. Go figure. I remember having a conversation with my studio partner Chas in our 20s about how Paul Drake was really doing all the heavy lifting and Perry was reaping the rewards. But the show certainly left an impression on me. With this new show. Mason puts in the labor too along with Della and Paul and it's a ride and a half.
