One of the best parts of working with species experts like those @sciencenorth is that they know Exactly what their little friends need. We built this insert for the green and leopard frogs based on a list of requirements, when we got there the Blue coats we able to come see, look for 5min and know that they needed a better larger basking area at very specific water level heights and they also needed an interactive cave. We immediately got to work and made the changes needed so that the best possible habitat was available. Happy Monday everyone!! Since we dropped the ball a bit last week we are going to finish our 5 day/5 post commitment on habitats for amphibians and reptiles! Today's is a Bull frog habitat we built for @sciencenorth. One of the biggest things I've learned while putting this week's posts together is that I need to take more videos and pictures of the process! I can't believe I have so few videos. That being said here is a good example of the stamping and carving process. You've seen the rolling, the brushing, next is stamping. Selection is so important! For every panel series we have a stamp series, plus a lot of general stamps. This particular job is a very specific style of granite that matches the geology in the area. So without a stamp to replicate and stay true to the flow, there would be a ton of extra work. It's also important to understand that stamping will never give the same depth and clean lines that a precast panel will. This is where the carving comes in! But first make sure that all of your lines, textures, and features line up with the big picture. As soon as you start carving a line with no beginning and no end is when you need to start over. I've seen so many S's and random X's plus a few other random parts of the alphabet in people's work (including some of our artists in training, before we make them start over) we say Everytime you pick up your carving knife have a reason to do so, if the stamping is good enough leave it! Scoured my videos to see if I had a good one but frankly I'm horrible at getting in action filming! Let's call that a new goal lol. Either way the next step to sculpting with panel is to brush in your edges. The brush is a fantastic tool and truthfully gets used from this point on. After the mud is on, rolled, we brush the edges, but we also brush carved lines to soften when needed, we go over everything so that no spot is missed and then we switch with each other when possible to quality control. This is one of the most important roles and easiest to mess up. New artists sole job is to roll and brush until they get that perfect, then stamping is next! So the number one request for the next series of posts is sculpting! Slightly more difficult now since we are not able to build anything during this shut down. That being said we do have 35 years of photos to pull from and last year we did a pretty cool cave. We sculpt on two different ways. The main way is with panels as seen here. We cut these pieces to meet the design intent. Then we lath each panel together giving us our shape, with the intent to stitch these pieces together without noticing. The next step is seen here, our special polymesh design is made to be flexible and high impact. Once hardened we have no longer have to worry about the shape and we can concentrate on the texture and the carving. Which I'll post later this week. The Lemurs and Giant Turtle habitat at @thetorontozoo was a ton of fun to create. Lots of interactives in this one, with climbing holds all the way to the top there are multiple spots the staff can hide away treats! I've realized that despite having done Dozens of incredible projects at the Zoo over the past 35 years our photo selection is all with old poor quality phones, or in print. What is your favourite part of Toronto zoo or your local zoo? With so many people home watching the Tiger King, I thought it might be a good idea to show what a big cat habitat should look like. This is the Cheetah habitat that we helped create. They have a large chunk of open ground to roam as well as look out points and interactive places to meet the public with safe barriers that help mimic their natural habitat. @thetorontozoo does a fantastic job it making this a priority. Freshly washed I couldn't help but take a picture of this piece. Stuck in our shop it gets a bit Dusty, which is why we will be transporting down to our show room this spring. One of my favourite granite panels already, with the real amethyst pieces embedded into the panel a truly unique piece of art is created! If you could replace the amethyst with a different precious crystal which would it be?
