It was another day. Â Mitch laid in bed despite the sun having long risen. Â The suite he rented was more than expensive but the woman at the desk the night before had annoyed him since he didnât look like he could pay for a cheap motel. Â Paris was more than awake as it was lunchtime. Â The night before forgotten since he had spent it alone. Â Having only been in Paris for a couple days he hadnât done much and had not been walking around much. Â He didnât speak the language but could get by as he tended to do.
Moving in the bed he realized he could stretch himself out completely in it. Something was off or maybe he didnât remember how big the bed was. Â Drowning oneâs mind in alcohol tended to do that. Â Always wanting to be forgetting his past it seemed booze was the only way to do it since he didnât want to resort to pills. Â Looking out the window he decided to get out of bed and start his day. There were things to see as he hadnât been in Paris before. Â Standing up and heading for the shower he ducked out of habit not wanting to hit his head on the doorframe. Â Looking back at it it seemed further away, âdamn brain you are drunk this morning.â Standing in the shower he closed his eyes and didnât think about anything except the torments his mind felt he needed. Â Fortunately it wasnât much as his mind was not really awake and he didnât slip away from the world. Â
Reaching for the towel he frowned when he couldnât reach where he had put it with his usual ease. Â Looking in the mirror he realized he didnât have to look down as he normally would. Â âWhat the hell?â Â Digging in his suitcase he pulled jeans and a t-shirt out as he didnât feel like dressing up. Â Sitting on the bed he tossed the shirt on and pulled the pants on. Â âOkay something is seriously fucked.â Â The pants were too long to the point he would have to roll them up. Â Trying to figure out if he was just still drunk or something else was afoot he sat there looking at his feet trying to figure out if they were smaller too. Slipping his shoes on he sighed in relief as they fit. Â The shirt was longer than he remembered. Â Standing in the room he went into the bathroom without ducking and looked in the mirror again. Â The dark circles under his eyes were huge and his eyes red from how much he was drinking everyday. Â âWell what other craziness do I have to look forward to today?â
Going downstairs and out to the street people were walking around and things looked normal to him but Mitch was more than confused as things were at the wrong level. Â Not wanting to bother with a cab since they were smaller in Europe he started walking down the sidewalk and realized he wasnât looking down on most everyone. Not wanting to appear out of place he didnât say anything but was looking at his phone for a moment to find a cafĂŠ for lunch. Â After being seated his back started hurting as he sat in the simple outdoor chair and it made no sense as he looked confused and annoyed as he studied the menu. Being a tourist area the menu was in English fortunately.
He kept looking around taking in the other patrons but never focusing on any particular one. Â Placing his order he kept shifting in the chair trying to be comfortable and the waitress was looking at him wondering what the problem was but Mitch smiled at her to indicate things were fine. Â
Mitch didnât notice the other man sitting several tables away except to glance at him once and put his mind elsewhere. Â The height of the table was wrong and he set the glass of water down hard not meaning to but only one person seemed to notice as he closed his eyes letting his mind wander and try to understand what was going on. Â The morning was gone and ruined so maybe the afternoon would be better. Â Staring openly at the man far away Mitch was making faces but they were only thought and nothing more. Â The smile didnât appear on his face at all as he waited for his lunch.
