For the first part of this project, an uppercaseĀ āMā with the Adobe Caslon font was used. The natural object incorporated was a pair of meerkats standing with their backs turned to each other. Adobe Caslonās uppercase āMā had a straight stem whichĀ could be seen as a meerkat standing straight to guard its mob. Although the upper serif was removed, the snout of the meerkats were used to give off the illusion of a serif. The bottom serif was used to form the tail end of the meerkats.Ā
Franklin Gothic was used for the uppercase letter "R". The manmade object incorporated for this letter was a pill bottle and two pills. The counters of the letter was utilized to create the image. The pills were arranged to mimic how they would look like falling from a bottle. Parts of theĀ āRāās counter was left as to not lose the letterform completely.

Word listing
Using my initials M (Micah) and R (Rivera), I used the different fonts we had to use so I could look look at the letterform. I considered the outline, the shape, and the negative space of each letterform.
Looking up images of natural and manmade objects was a huge help for my world list. There are thousands of objects to choose from and narrowing it down would be more efficient. I have a pinterest board of some of the images I used while doing my word listing:Ā https://www.pinterest.com/mbr9829/1302-letterform-objects/
I also tested out how the form might look like by drawing it beside the word. The starred words are the objects I used for my thumbnails.
Thumbnails
LetterĀ āMā: Sans serif, manmade objects
LetterĀ āMā: Serif, natural objects
LetterĀ āRā: Sans serif, manmade objects
LetterĀ āRā: Serif, natural objects
I made sure to consider not just how the letterforms look but also the counter of the letters.
Roughs
From the 48 thumbnails, I picked out 6 of what I thought would fit the project and made inked roughs. During in-class critique, it was decided that the meerkats for the letterĀ āMā and the pill bottle and pills for the letterĀ āRā would work best for this project.
Notes:Ā Before submitting for portfolio, revise statement of intent. Invert the colors of the meerkat for the B&W one and check if it works better. Change color of letter R.

The four animals used in this project is a tiger, an alligator, a gorilla, and a giraffe; animals that almost every zoo has. These animals have unique features and form to them that could make them easily identified. Using only polygonal forms, the simplification of the animalsā forms while still retaining their distinguishable features becomes the main objective of this piece. To unify the system, the eye used in each animal is the exact shape and size. The faces of the animals are zoomed in so that the unique features of each animal is emphasized. Although each animal is different in a lot of ways, this pictogram system serves as a unified but effective representation of the four zoo animals.
Process
This rough is what I used for the final. It was a revision of Rough 2 (which I was going to use for the final initially)
My professor helped me make the system for unified and achieve a balance with the black and whites.Ā
Note:Ā Before portfolio submission, revise statement of intent. Redo the lines at the bottom of gorilla (too thick).
Walking around Downtown San Marcos, you will find a lot of stickers. A lot of these privately owned establishments have stickers on them. On windows, on storefronts, even on walls. Most are for advertising purposes, but are also placed there without authorization. A photograph that saysĀ āPrivate Officeā was used as the main imagery. Different photographs of stickers have been placed around the main image. Some are intruding the space taken by the main image to show how these unauthorized stickers are taking up space not meant for them.

The word pairing chosen for this project is "delicate" and "sturdy". The government is supposed to be the foundation of a country. It should be the perfect organization that's firm and strong to keep a country in order. However, that doesn't seem to be the case for the U.S government. One small conflict can bring it down and result in chaos, exposing the reality that the government is actually a very delicate organization. A flag was used for the word "sturdy" since it represents the appearance of a strong government while flowers were used for the word "delicate". Pieces of the flag were cut out to show signs of tear and wear. The flag was superimposed over the flowers and made to look like it grew out of the stem. This is to emphasize the overlooked fact that the government is a fragile organization. The flag transitioning to flower petals achieves the same symbolism but shows the effects of being delicate. Scratched textures were layered over the image to highlight the imperfect state of the government. The saturation of the image was lowered to make the colors less warm and look more bleak.
For this Project, I focused on using fun but simple imagery to help show the letters. For the B, I decided on a san serif using Gill Sans Bold, I chose to use the man-made object of a box, and I wanted to show dimensionĀ using color but still allow for it to be readable in black and white. As for the serif font, I chose a Bodoni 72, it gave the perfect bottom curve for what I wanted for the leaf I was making, I kept the bottom black to show the G but wanted the leaf to remain colorful but hopefully stay seen.
For the Letterforms and Objects project, Iāll be focusing on the letters O and R, Using the Fonts Baskerville for my natural object and Gill Sans for my Man made object. I will try to have both letters either play off one another or be total opposites, try to communicate relations between both objects chosen if possible. I intend to keep color palettes simple, play some with sizing to work with the object to create a piece that is interesting to look at and doesn't feel cluttered or feel like there is too much going on. My goal is toĀ explore Illustrator and its capabilitiesĀ with coloring and form about how to best combine a Letter and an Object in a balanced and simple manner.
