oh yeah, Aerith tries to warn him off, likely to try and keep him from the pain hes in during Advent Children - the ambiguity is in whether she actually is that Aerith or just aware of her future selfs experiences (unlike Sephiroth, Aerith doesnt seem the type to go possessing her younger self), though she apparently is also fully aware of what Jenova is from the start and knows Sephiroth is out to destroy the planet

and i mean, technically? all the Dissidia games are canon to the greater FF multiverse (Brave Exvius also adds to that multiverse even more, with NieR, Kingdom Hearts, Bravely Default, Fullmetal Alchemist, Tomb Raider and Deus Ex in the mix) - though it seems with the villains are always drawn from an earlier point in time than their respective heroes are (for obvious reasons, because the heroes can be taken from the ends of their stories - usually, Noctis is an exception - but the villains are typically dead) and its always kept kinda ambiguous when Sephiroth is from in that case, if hes from during the main game, if hes been pulled out of the lifestream as his post-AC self, etc. dude is hard to kill

another factor is that the people involved in Dissidia always forget their time there (likely so the knowledge of the multiverse doesnt potentially inform their decisions later on down the line), so Sephiroth may not consciously remember

In a way, Advent Children doesn’t fully shoot down the Armageddon theory. Red still appears with his kids at the ruins of Midgar, humanity could have still died after several events. Also, do you think the new games will expand on Jenova? Because I’m a fan of the “Jenova was an Omega Weapon from another planet and nature can be terrifying” theory.

@artabria i am unfamiliar with this theory! do you have a link of someone explaining it? or would you be willing to explain it to me? i don’t remember a whole lot about dirge of cerberus (i’ve only been through it once, many years ago), so i’m not as up to snuff with my knowledge of omega weapon as i would like. i AM, however, extremely interested. so please !! i’d love to hear this.

i’m not entirely sure what the remake is going to do with jenova, though. i was pretty disappointed with the scene of her leaving hojo’s lab. in OG, it was terrifying because the implication was that sephiroth’s will had overwritten her consciousness so completely that he was able to control her physical form from the north crater and lead her to his side. but in the remake, he has a black cloak come in and physically remove her, which changes things. her body is no longer moving on its own, and she remains limp and lifeless for the entire remake.

i certainly hope that they do go into her more. for all my gripes with the way the remake did the removal scene, i absolutely ADORED the trail of cosmic goo she left in her wake. jenova’s basically a lovecraftian great old one -- she’s this eldritch elder god -- and it was so cool to see the remake lean into that imagery, if just a little.

i also appreciated the way that the remake had shinra give a PR spin to the death of the ancients, removing any mentions of the calamity from the skies at all and giving them the fate of the dinosaurs instead. i thought that was really neat.

But does she do the combos with Sephiroth’s weapon or with her chair?

It seems like the easiest path to take right now, because the other option to bring Zack in would be to have the group traveling between dimensions. However, if Zack is the clone, then it means that he had survived all along, and not because Cloud and the others defied Destiny.

yes!!! so zack would’ve ended up there either way. jenova has the ability to reanimate the dead (seen through sephiroth and, honestly, herself). so whether zack had survived against the shinra army or not, he STILL would’ve ended up a man in a black cloak.

so it all goes back to the monkey paw idea of you get what you want but not the way you want it.

yeah, cloud saved zack from being killed by shinra goons. so what? there was no escaping jenova. his eventual deterioration and madness was inescapable either way.

it’s also probably worth pointing out that

1. both president shinra AND elmyra confirm that SOLDIERs deteriorate on a cellular level and die early

2. oates points out that the men in the black cloaks (or, at the very least, one of them) used to be SOLDIER

so it makes sense for this to happen to zack regardless of the outcome of his fight with the shinra goons.

plus, this narrative decision by the writers makes jenova and sephiroth an even more powerful and threatening menace.
