I saw this story and it is absolutely bonkers. But also it's a good reminder that the Nazis weren't the only ones looting during WWII. The Nazi looting of WWII was the largest scale, most well-organized, and most violent act of art theft in the history of humanity, but as the Allies swept through Europe, a lot was taken by Americans and other Allied forces as well. It's wonderful that the bust could be identified and that it will go back to the museum it was taken from. (Although there's a whole...lot to talk about in terms of Ludwig I being the previous owner, I'm not well-educated enough in that sphere to do the talking.)
I also have to say, like, Good For Her. If I'd seen that bust in a thrift shop in Austin, I'd have been like "Well that's fun but kind of hideous and not worth $35." I tend to side with the people who think it's a son of Pompey just because Pompey had that real inverted-triangle top-heavy-head look going on too.
My Monuments Men Foundation playing cards arrived! I had an inquiry from an anon about images other than what was available online, but not specifically what they were looking for, so I thought I’d take a picture of a few cards. Each card has the MMF tipline on the back (upper right) and an image of a work looted (or presumed looted) by the Nazis and still missing after WWII on the face. I like that they list the owner and give a bit of context for each work as well as the image and descriptive details.Â

Do you know anyone who has bought the WWII Most Wanted Art Card Deck and posted pictures of the cards beyond what people can see in articles about them?
I'm afraid I don't know anyone else who's bought one and shared images, but I bought a deck so I can give a full review when they arrive!

The Monuments Men Foundation has released a super cool deck of playing cards featuring a different work of missing and looted art on each card, meant to help raise awareness about art still unrecovered after WWII. Decks like this were sometimes issued during WWII featuring images of most-wanted war criminals and enemy combatants, so it’s neat that they are doing the same now for the art!Â
Buying the cards also supports the foundation, and there is a reward of up to $25K for information leading to the recovery of the looted and missing works.Â
