Whether it was from timidity, embarrassment, or perhaps even a bit of fear, Sonya lowered her gaze from the prince's for a long moment. But try as she might, she couldn't hold back a soft and tender smile. He'd broken nearly all of her defenses. Somehow torn down almost every wall she'd built up in an effort to protect herself.

Pierre had done the same for Natasha, had he not? He'd gone above and beyond to prove his love. And look how happy they were now! Natasha was as bright, vibrant, and alive as she was when they were girls. And Pierre finally seemed to be at peace. Could she really have that for herself, if given the chance? If she were brave enough, could she break free and live the life her parents and brother surely must have wanted for her? Could she know calm and peace? Safety? Could she leave fear and want behind forever?

Thinking back to the night of the Tsar's ball, Sonya never could have imagined that the dashing young prince who asked her to dance could have changed her life so. She'd always thought that it would be just one beautiful night that she could hold onto forever. A fleeting memory. And then, when they fled Moscow, she'd been so stunned to walk up to the wagon and offer help, only for that familiar face to turn around. To open the curtain to reveal Prince Bolkonsky. And again, Sonya had been certain that that time again would pass without impact. But he'd come back again, with the help of Pierre and Marya.

Lifting her eyes to his once more, her smile only grew wider. Somewhere along the way, he'd take root in her heart. And, like Pierre before him, he'd offered more than enough proof that his heart and intentions were true. Even though he might face social disgrace due to her poverty, he never cared.

"Daddy, is Papa mad?" "We made Papa upset again, Daddy!"

The twin daughters of Dokugai and Caspian. They are full of mischief often terrorize their Papa. They both have hidden fangs and snake-like tongues, much like Caspian.

Other Info:

As Caspian is a snake, the two girls hatched from eggs.

They'll develop a few light scales as they get older, and their hair will lighten to a more brown-ish colour.

Dokugai wants to "teach them how to catch boys" when they're older. (Cas does not approve.)

They call Dokugai "Daddy" and Caspian "Papa".

Though they adore terrorizing him, they love their papa very much. They will favour Dokugai as children, but start to love both parents more equally as they grow up.

Dokugai and the twins love cuddling with Caspian, even in his snakey form.

As adults, they are nearly as tall as Dokugai.

Their occupation is both the students and assistants of Dokugai. They know the majority of his tips and tricks, though Dokugai has claimed that he "hasn't taught them everything".

When Mercuri gets older, she develops a crush on Lec Hijoushiki.

While Mercuri likes the idea of finding someone and settling down, Arseni prefers the freedom of being single and having fun.

The ball was everything Sonya had dreamed it would be. But it was also everything she expected. There was Natasha, along all the other beautiful and eligible young ladies, dancing and beaming. Having the time of her life, and Sonya herself stood on the sidelines.

Watching her life pass before her eyes, reminded of all the things she'd lost and never have again... Still, Ilya and Natalia could have left her behind to mind Petya. She was grateful they hadn't. Even a penniless ward like her could pretend that she had a chance at a ball like this.

Sonya was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't even realize that the gentleman coming toward herself and her uncle had stopped. "Sonya, darling." Ilya called.

Shaking her head, she looked over. "Yes, Papa?"

Then, she noticed the gentleman's outstretched hand. Immediately, her eyes widened and she looked from him, to Ilya, and over to her aunt. She'd not be pleased if any light meant to shine on Natasha was turned instead to Sonya.

"Go on, darling. A first ball only happens once."
