Rosh Hashanah seems like a million years away from this side of Yom Kippur, but in reality it was only 11 days ago.  I spent the holiday at Synagoge Oranienburger Straße (the Neue Synagoge), an egalitarian shul which used to be the central synagogue of Berlin's Jewish community until it was mostly destroyed during Kristallnacht.  During the Cold War it was in East Berlin, and in 1989, after the wall fell, the government began to repair the synagogue.  The main temple area serves as a historical site which many visitors enter every day, but the upstairs area is reserved for actual religious services.  The synagogue is very friendly to foreigners - I was given the choice between a Mahzor with English or German translation when I entered - and the Erev Rosh Hashanah service was packed.  After a lovely service, I went with a few friends to a dinner hosted in the synagogue.  It was delicious Israeli-style food - couscous and vegetables, vegetable soup, hummus, even cut up Sabras on all of our tables!  This is definitely unlike how I've spent any Rosh Hashanah of my life - I've always been at home with my family - so all of this was pretty new to me already, but then we rounded the night off by stopping by at a place with a dance floor nearby that has Swing Dancing every Wednesday just to look in and ended up staying for nearly two hours!  I don't think I've ever been Swing Dancing on Rosh Hashanah before.  I had a great time, fancy dress and all!

I went to services at Oranienburger Str. again the next day and felt really charmed by the sense of community that the congregation gives off.  There are a lot of families there with young children, a fair amount of young people, and a very devoted group of people such as ushers helping to run the service.  Even though I knew very few people (I bumped into some Bambinim families there!) I didn't feel out of place or awkward; rather it was very easy for me to sit there alone and feel integrated with the community.

That night, a few of us who work regularly at Bambinim got together for a potluck style dinner.  I brought Empanadas made with my grandmother's recipe (I even made the dough myself!), but we also had some delicious Tzimmes, Moroccan-style fish, eggplant, and of course delicious apple cake for desert.  It was great to spend the second night with such wonderful people, and since I always love to cook, I also had a great time preparing for it.  

The second day I fully intended to go to shul.  In fact, I decided to simultaneously improve my understanding of distances in Berlin and walk there (a walk of maybe a little over an hour).  But my walk cut through the Tiergarten, a beautiful park in the middle of Berlin, and I have to confess that I felt so calm there, with the sun streaming through the trees and the utter quiet only a little ways off of the main road, that I never made it out of the park.  I am sure that services were lovely, but I had a great second day of Rosh Hashanah on my little bit of earth and grass and felt very rested and grounded afterwards.
