Home to the highest mountain in the Arab world, the 4,167m high Toubkal, the surrounding national park gave a good taster of the High Atlas Mountain Range. I didn’t have time to head to the summit of Toubkal, but enjoyed exploring the villages on the route to it.

First day in Aroumd

After meeting my group for dinner the previous evening, Sunday morning we travelled to Aroumd. We took the bus to the bottom of the town and then trekked for about one hour and ‘some minutes’ (anywhere ranging from 0-30 minutes according to our guide Hamid/Hamish) to get to the gite we were staying in that evening. We were greeted with tea and then had lunch. A few of us then chose to hike up Toubkal, 2000m up, part of the Atlas mountains, to a shrine - and the furthest you can go in a day - which ended up being a 4 and a half hour round trip and a trip to a rug store! Who’d have thought it - a berber shop in the middle of a mountain! We met many travellers along the way on foot and by mule as this is a daily walk for the members of Asni town and most locals can do it in 30 minutes at a run!
