THE THREE ATLAS RANGES
High Atlas (Haut Atlas): The most dramatic range, running southwest from Marrakech toward the Sahara. Home to Jbel Toubkal (4,167m, North Africa's highest peak), the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and access to Ait Ben Haddou. Middle Atlas (Moyen Atlas): More forested, with cedar trees, Barbary macaques, and mountain lakes. Anti-Atlas: Ancient and volcanic, home to some of Morocco's most remote Berber communities.
TOUBKAL SUMMIT TREK: THE CROWN JEWEL
At 4,167m, Toubkal is North Africa's highest peak. Even non-technical climbers can reach the summit with proper preparation and a licensed guide. Standard 2-day route: Day 1 — Imlil village (1,740m) to Toubkal Refuge (3,207m). Day 2 — Summit (4,167m) and return. Best months: April–June and September–October. A licensed mountain guide is required.
IMLIL VALLEY: AUTHENTIC BERBER LIFE
Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal and a beautiful destination in its own right. Berber families farm terraced mountain slopes of walnut and apple orchards. Traditional mountain guesthouses offer an extraordinary window into Amazigh culture. Even without summiting Toubkal, a day walk through the valley — visiting the hamlet of Armed and the ancient Kasbah du Toubkal — is one of Morocco's most rewarding experiences.
OURIKA VALLEY: EASY DAY TRIP FROM MARRAKECH
Just 30km from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley road winds through red-rock gorges, terraced fields, and Berber villages to the waterfall village of Setti Fatma (seven cascading waterfalls). Berber restaurants along the valley serve traditional tagines by the river. There is also a small Tuesday souk selling handmade goods not found in Marrakech's tourist markets.
TIZI N'TICHKA PASS: THE GREAT ATLAS ROAD
The N9 road from Marrakech to Ouarzazate crosses the High Atlas at 2,260m — one of the most spectacular mountain drives in Africa. Hairpin bends, Berber villages on cliffsides, argan forests, and a bare rock moonscape summit. This is the main route to the Sahara from Marrakech and demands an unhurried pace. Stop often.
DRAA VALLEY: WHERE DESERT MEETS MOUNTAIN
Stretching south from Ouarzazate to Zagora, the Draa Valley floor is a ribbon of green date palms and oasis villages cutting through arid moonscape. The kasbahs here — including the spectacular Tamnougalt Kasbah — tell the story of the trans-Saharan trade routes. Zagora was once the departure point for 52-day camel journeys to Timbuktu.
