Carmen Crusoe, one of the featured panelists for #AreYouWoke, is a sophomore at Howard University where she is a double major of Africana Studies and Political Science. This past summer, Carmen had the unique opportunity of working at the Washington DC office of Open Society Foundations as a criminal justice reform research assistant for Nkechi Taifa esq. Carmen Crusoe is a member of the Kwame Ture Society which is a study group for students who value the promotion of African intellectual thought, deep study, and community engagement. She is also a member of the Black Power Chronicles where SNCC veterans, academicians, and other community members come together to honor and continue the legacy of Black Power. Danielle Armstrong, Vice President of the Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network is one of the featured panelists for #Areyouwoke? Shaping Black Consciousness in 2018 A local Northern Virginian, Danielle, was born in Alexandria, VA, and grew up in the suburbs of Lorton, VA. In 2014, Danielle graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, VA, with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology, minoring in both Sociology, and Nonprofit Management & Administration. She moved back to the area after college, and since she has tried to become an integral part of her community. Not only is Danielle a committed member, and Vice President of the Northern Virginia Urban League, she is also a Girl Scout leader to ten Daisy girls. Jamal Muhammad, guest panelists for #AreYouWoke, also known as “DJ One Luv...” was born and raised in Pittsburgh (Steel City), PA., but has resided in Washington, D.C. area since 1994. He is a dedicated community activist, advocate for Black entrepreneurship, economic empowerment & independence, and major contributor to the cultural & creative arts in the Black community in the Washington area. Jamal used his radio show, The Luv Lounge Radio Show, for 10 plus years, as a platform to address the issues of the Black community domestic and internationally. He is a strong activist against racial injustice & racial profiling in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, he works with various organizations on improving racial equality & equity. The multi-talented Muhammad is also a dynamic visual artist, event producer, and sought after local DJ. His own artwork can be seen on display at various venues around the Washington metropolitan area. As an event manager and producer with extensive experience in stage production, he has launched and promoted various events, including plays, ceremonies, forums, panel discussions, etc for community, political, cultural, and business organizations. He is recognized as a major contributor to the current format of D.C.’s vibrant U Street corridor. Jamal is a key contributing member of the Annual National Black Luv Festival. As DJ One Luv he is very sought after and performs annually for various events and organizations. "I'm not a rapper, I'm a poet with a hip-hop style".   Bomani Armah, one of the featured guest panelists at #AreYouWoke, is a Washington DC native and a proud resident of Prince George’s County Maryland where his earliest musical influences were gospel and Go-Go.  He credits his community for preparing him to be, as supporting him as, an artist and an educator. Bomani is most known for his Internet viral and BET music video hit "Read a Book". He has many aliases including art educator “Baba Bomani” to students throughout Maryland, “Notarapper” on the vibrant poetry and hip-hop scene, and “The Watermelon Man” in the community. For almost 20 years Bomani has used his extensive experience as a poet, producer and hip-hop MC, to teach fun and informative workshops, residencies, assemblies, professional development classes and seminars in what has evolved into a writing curriculum called BARS. He is currently a much sought after teaching artist on the Young Audiences of Maryland roster, frequently a Kennedy Center Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA) program facilitator, and a Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning facilitator. Bomani is the founder of Watermelon Day at Sankofa, a yearly celebration of community, art, education and watermelon on the first Saturday in August at Sankofa Video & Books Cafe.
