Today in #BlackHistory November 30, 1924 Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm, hall of fame educator and politician, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Chisholm earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College in 1946 and her Master of Arts degree in elementary education from Columbia University in 1952. From 1953 to 1959, she was director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center and from 1959 to 1964 an educational consultant for the New York Division of Day Care. Chisholm was elected to the New York State Legislature in 1964 and in 1968 was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1968, the first Black woman elected to Congress. Throughout her 14 years in Congress, Chisholm worked to increase spending for education, health care and other social services, and was a vocal opponent of the military draft. In 1972, Chisholm made a bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, receiving 152 votes at the Democratic National Convention. After leaving Congress in 1983, Chisholm was named to the Purington Chair at Mount Holyoke College where she taught for four years. Chisholm wrote two autobiographies, “Unbought and Unbossed” (1970) and “The Good Fight” (1973). She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. Chisholm died January 1, 2005. The next month, a documentary film, “Shirley Chisholm ’72: Unbought and Unbossed” which chronicled her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, was aired on public television. @commissionercrawford is one of our panelists for tonight’s #StateOfSouthEastDC town hall meeting. Sharece Crawford is a native Washingtonian. She grew up in the Congress Park Community of Congress Heights. Sharece was raised in the Greater Good Samaritan Baptist Church and has a strong foundation of faith and spirituality. This led her to Shaw University where she graduated with a degree in Journalism, Mass Media Communications and Marketing. Sharece is one of DC's youngest 3 term elected officials. She was recently elected to the DC Democratic State Committee, receiving over 21,000 Votes from DC residents. She earned this milestone achievement while serving as the elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) in Single Member District 8C03. As an ANC Commissioner — Sharece achieved created several platforms. One of them being the Resolution Roundtable. This Roundtable served an inclusive module that has been duplicated around the country to resolve joint issues. Sharece has become nationally and globaly sought after and endorsed by international figures for her service.
