My biggest issue with Riverdale is that it shouldn’t be called Riverdale. 

I’m sure this isn’t a statement that’s new or groundbreaking, but honestly this is why I hate the show so much. It doesn’t have anything to do with the Archie Comics other than taking the names of the characters and the locations. 

It’s not ‘a new take’ or a ‘reimagining’ because the key traits that made each character who they are are not there. After an established history that’s been going on since 1941, you’d think it would be easier to make a show based of it and actually have the characters act like themselves, but they don’t... They have been twisted to fall into the same stereotypes as any other teen drama on TV, when it could have been better than that. 

This isn’t about Riverdale being dark, because there are, especially in modern day Archie comics, a lot of dark plots and storylines that could be adapted to a TV show. One’s that don’t erase the characters original identity. 

Jughead’s supposed to be a food-obsessed best friend who’s playful and smart and for Archie’s clumsy, sweet, and girl-obsessed personality. They turned him into a super nihilistic loner who bumps up this shows quota of edgy kids. They couldn’t even have him keep his obsession with food. Which is just wrong. Jughead loves food more than he loves anything. (I’m not even going to get started on the ace erasure. You’ve heard about it.  You know of their sins.)

There are plenty of other examples that really drive the nail into the coffin about how poor of an adaptation this is and for that, I’ll point you to this video by the youtube channel, Mother’s Basement:

In my opinion the Riverdale TV series isn’t good, and if anything could make as a pretty good guilty pleasure watch if you like a few chuckles at some sub-par writing, and think that’s a shame.
