Visions of Arcadia: Sights Along Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa
In late June Neal and were guests at SoonerCon in Oklahoma City. After, we took scenic route 66 to Tulsa. It was late in the day when we hit the road, but I managed to take a few photos in the last of the light.
Our first stop was Pop’s, an wonderfully, unapologetically modern roadside attraction in Arcadia featuring a gas station, gift shop, and restaurant with a soda pop theme. Built in 2007, the award-winning glass and metal building designed by Elliott + Associates Architects includes a cantilevered truss extending over the gas station area, and a 66 foot sculpture in the shape of a soft drink bottle. I like that Pop’s honors the past without pretending to be an older attraction.
On the road from Oklahoma City to Tulsa, we stopped at Pop’s. This 66 foot soda bottle “sign” was designed by Rand Elliott.
Pop’s metal and glass building incorporates its featured merchandise, colorful glass bottles of soft drinks, organized by color, into its interior and exterior design.
Bottled soda and taffy from Pop’s. (I bought postcards too.) The soft drinks were delicious, but Neal and I forgot how taffy melts and sticks to the wrapper in hot weather.
Pop’s has an impressive variety of soft drinks, including harder-to find fruit flavors. Neal declared the Frostie Grape Soda we bought the best grape soda available today. (I’m a cherry soda fan.)
Just a little further done the road we saw the famous Round Barn, and some empty buildings across the street, which were probably from the heyday of Route 66.

I loved the abstract design here.

Residents upset historic society has yet to fix broken landmark
... A historic land marker along Route 66, between Luther and Arcadia, remains broken and on the side of the road after someone knocked it over more than a year ago. The Run of 89 East Boundary marker sits near the corner of Route 66 and North Indian Meridian. The marker represents the location for the East Line of the Land Run, which began at noon on April 22, 1889. ...
