The pop before the storm. July 2021
Oklahoma showing off again.
It’s a long, boring story as to why I haven’t been shooting film as much, but it all boils down to cameras breaking and me procrastinating. I’m hoping to change that trend. Anyway, here’s POPS on film. FB followers, click on link to see all four photos in the series.
It used to live on Rt. 66 in Clinton, Oklahoma. Now it's just another eyesore on The Mother Road. I'm not sure of its fate, as one site said the local city council condemned it, and another says they opted to try and save it. The original building with all the wonderful mid-century elements is 17 rooms, and perhaps that's the one refurbishers could realistically salvage if the money and will were there. It's a huge property; 75 rooms in total (and a pool) after a couple of upgrades and add-ons back in the late '50s. The "new" motel office has pretty cool lines, and the parking lot next to the original building has some marvelous decorative covering. (Updated: never mind. What I thought was a decorative parking lot must have been the flooring to the restaurant next door that burned down in 1999.)
I can't even muster romantic feelings about these places anymore. They just make me sad and angry. I told myself last year I was going to quit photographing abandoned buildings for a number of reasons (creatively, it's *so* cliche), but I get drawn in every now and again. I'm still a sucker for a really good sign if nothing else.

POPS 2020. I try to look at the building differently every time I’m there. But that light and those bottles....
