we've all had to deal with really annoying people who hate spiders but if you're ever not in a position where you can just tell them to eat shit, remember this juvenile male cross orbweaver (Araneus diadematus) and the way he looked like he was about to burst into tears because i acknowledged his presence. let his cowardice illustrate their skill issue

Originally described as Epeira circulissparsa by Keyserling, in 1887.

You'd think the colour would be more worthy of naming it after, but there's at least two other Araneus species in Perth that are green. Although neither of them are named after the colour, either.

Plus, the actual pattern on this one can be quite variable - many have vivid red, yellow and white marks on the abdomen. The specific epithet refers to that, and is derived from the Latin for 'scattered circles'.

Either way, the species is widespread across Eastern and SW Australia, and spends the day hiding among foliage. No surprises there, at least.

Hello, yes this looks like Nordmann's Orbweaver (Araneus nordmanni), female, family Araneidae.

A. rotundulus was one of the first posts I ever made on this blog. It feels good to be able to post this species again, this time through a better lens.
