fisher king kd R U KIDDING that's. oh shit that's unfair levels of great. I'm so sorry, I'm gonna end up flailing at you re: healing question and fisher king wounds. When you post the story I will meta all over it and idk probably write you a sonnet.
Fun fact, waaaaaaaay back in the Dresden Files fandom, I had a series called the Matter of Chicago. It was really big. I had to abandon it because a friend of mine fucking betrayed me and ruined the entire thing for me, but the unwritten third part of MoC was going to be a modern parable about the Fisher King concept. To this day I'm still upset I never got to write it.
This is what I mean by my writing toolbox. I've been just waiting for the right story to let me use the Fisher King concept. AT LAAAAAST~!
(psst! i tried to be a curious anon but you have anon asks disabled so i am being a curious non-anon.) You mentioned at some point that you will be on a race and fandom panel at Nine Worlds -- I had a look at the con website and it looks awesome. Have you been to that con before? Is it as amazing as is sounds? Also, do you have any advice to newbie con attendees?
I have anon asks disabled? That's a thing you can do? WHY IS TUMBLR SO HARD, WHY WHY WHY anyway breathe if anyone wants to ask me anything at any point, they can, I am ready and willing to overshare. As you'll see.
I have indeed been to Nine Worlds before! The first one was last year, also in London - well, Heathrow - and it was awesome. I don't know how much you've gathered about the format, but Nine Worlds is basically ten or twelve or something (a lot, anyway) individual tracks running across a wide range of con spaces, both literal and metaphorical: this year, for example, there's queer fandom, race and culture, RPGs, food, geek feminism, Doctor Who, scepticism, Whedonverse, Game of Thrones, inter many alia. What that means, basically, is that you can have exactly the con you want - you can go to one of a thousand things, or not, just hang out in the lobby with basically a thousand other fans. There are cosplayers and Quidditch players and a dealers' room and just, a great, welcoming, happy open space. (Nine Worlds are very committed to creating accessible, safe con spaces for a diversity of people, which I appreciate greatly.) It is awesome.
This year I am running the Race and Culture track (while also appearing on panels in the Queer and Doctor Who tracks) - which, if you can believe, is a stark improvement on last year, when I somehow managed to agree to be on five panels in seven hours. It was... well, let us draw a kind veil over the end of the affair. A kind friend walked into my last panel of the day and dropped a pasty on the desk in front of me. dearthoughthenightisgone, I'm still grateful. But even despite that it was the best - looking back to see what I wrote at the time, I came home and said: "I am very pleased with the world, and the small spaces I fit into in it, tonight" - and ain't that a recommendation.
As for newbie con-goers, somebody else asked me this quite recently and some of what I'm saying now reproduces what I said to her, but, basically, if I had to pick a first con to go to, this one would be it. I've been going to cons since I was 15 - er, so about 12 years - and I've done both the big commercial cons (here in the UK, that's mostly Collectormania and LFCC), and the smaller fan-run ones (I lived in the US for a while; I've done Muskrat Jamboree and Pacificon over there) and while they both have their good points, I'd say Nine Worlds is a decent amalgam of the two. Though it does have the big-con trappings - dealers, notable guests, >1000 attendees - it is not-for-profit, fan-run and has a fan sensibility.
Generally speaking, my advice is to go with friends if you can, and just go with it. Pick out some stuff that you want to do, and have faith that fun stuff will happen, because nine times out of ten it will. (Ask me about that time I was 15 with a broken foot and my BFF carried me to the front of the queue to meet Gates McFadden.) Don't feel like you have to do everything on the schedule or even most of it. If you want to hang out in the lobby and talk fandom there instead, that is a perfectly legitimate use of your conbadge. And if you don't happen to have fannish friends you can go with, a con space is one of the few places where people often expect to strike up conversation with strangers. As a teeny fan, I found that a fannish prop often works wonders for meeting people at cons. Last year, mine was a black hood and a sign reading "DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE DOG PARK"; this year it's going to be Vulcan ears and a combadge. Oh, and carry food with you - Nine Worlds' one major failing is it's in a food desert - and drink lots of water!
I hope that helps. Feel free to ask me to overshare any time.
