Approaching Shadow, 1954 | photo Fan Ho ( 何藩, Chinese, 1931--2016)
Approaching Shadow (阴影) by Fan Ho (何藩). 1954.
Acclaimed photographer, film director, and actor Fan Ho was celebrated worldwide for his cinematic and photographic endeavors. Most of Fan’s photos focus on urban life, demonstrating a fascination with individuals’ reality through candid photos of street vendors, children, and passerby. Fan also worked extensively in film, notably appearing in the Shaw Brothers’ lavish rendition of Journey to the West before moving on to produce his own independent films.
Approaching Shadow is among Fan’s most famous photos; it portrays his cousin at Queen’s College. Fan added the stark diagonal shadow in the darkroom to symbolize the ultimate deterioration of her youthfulness.
