This week in class, we discussed as to whether or not music has universal properties across cultures. I mentioned briefly (without knowing many of the ideas behind it) the appogiatura: "a note in the melody which doesn’t belong to the chord being played behind it". The dissonant sound can create such a tension that it disquiets the listener, or as in the above example, just makes them sad. While singing The Rainbow Connection and playing an F-sharp major on his banjo, "connection" sees Kermit's voice dips down to G-sharp, a note that isn't on the F-sharp major triad.
