Where exactly is proprietary software used in terms of computers?

First of all, proprietary software is software that is branded, patented, copyrighted, trademark…in short it is exclusive software that is  used to help operate your computer. The most well-known proprietary software  is Windows OS and Apple’s Mac OS X.  You as a consumer have to pay for this software to help operate your computer or most of the time you have no say and it is already installed in a new phone or laptop you bought (will have a blog about this).

I have included the link to a new Apple OS software called: OS X Mountain Lion (click on the title to this post). It is marketed on the website as a OS that will “make your Mac work better…even better with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.” This OS system boasts 200 features. In reality, Apple’s software restricts users from using its operating systems on other devices that are non-Apple products. This is an example of companies fighting against free or open source software movements. They are creating enclosures to their own software by using compatibility as a way to create and maintain enclosures. Since they are struggling to maintain control in the virtual world, companies are instead using physical products and hardware as another alternative. This seems to be succeeding for companies...for now.
