     she  observes  his  tensed  frame  from  behind  ,    still  and  serene  as  untouched  water  .      the  early  light  casts  her  in  golden  shadows  ,    her  brown  hair  still  tumbling  wildly  from  her  shoulders  to  her  waist  .      she  wonders  ,    fleetingly  ,    if  he  knows  she’s  there      —      then  thinks  better  of  it  .      he  would  know  me  anywhere  .      

A VOYAGE DEVOID OF HUMAN COMPANY might unsettle even the most seasoned space traveler, but Amilyn found herself at home among her mechanical crew. For those that cared to discern them, they each had their own distinct personality, their own perks and ways of operating that made them unique.  They could pass the time as well as any person. And her co-pilot, R4-G6, had an excellent sense of humor. 

“All right,” she began, speaking into the comm channel that linked them all, “before we make the jump, everybody check in.” G6 chirped beside her, followed by a whistle from S4 on the deck below. However, T9, stationed in the hull, remained curiously -- even OMINOUSLY -- silent. “Teenine?”

“ That  hurts-    I’m  plenty  charming. ”    He  should  be  grateful  they  allowed  him  even  the  smallest  glimpse  into  the  confines  of  their  psyche,  even  if  it  was  for  a  joke  at  his  expense.    Malak,  at  the  very  least,  would’ve  found  it  funny.    ( no,  he  wouldn’t. )    Vader’s  irritation  sits  heavily  around  them,  licking  at  their  heels  through  the  Force  with  an  oppressive  weight.    It's  somewhat  beautiful  to  watch  the  world  ebb  and  flow  around  him  at  his  every  whim,  even  involuntarily.    Like  sitting  in  the  eye  of  a  storm,  watching  devastation  approaching  on  the  horizon.    They  try  to  summon  the  will  to  be  concerned  but  fail  to  scrounge  up  the  energy,  instead  laughing  dryly  as  they  sit.

“ There’s  no  such  thing  as  living  forever,  Vader.    Even  ghosts  fade  eventually. ”    Against  his  imposing  figure  they  appear  far  from  sinister,  languid  and  nonchalant  as  they  return  their  attention  to  the  datapad  they  had  been  reading  before  Vader  had  come  to  them.    It  would’ve  been  easier  just  to  ask,  they  want  to  say,  but  they  know  Sith  do  not  make  requests.    At  most  there  is  only  the  illusion  of  choice,  ultimatums  backed  with  a  silent  but  iron  fist  meant  to  squeeze  out  what  was  demanded.    It  is  only  their  power  that  protects  them,  only  the  possibility  of  him  gaining  something  from  them  that  grants  them  permission  to  be  in  his  presence.    “ Breaking  the  natural  order  requires  sacrifice,  and  the  more  you  give  the  less  you’ll  recognize  what  you’ve  become. ”    You  know  this  hangs  silently  in  the  air  as  they  give  him  a  meaningful  look.    “ Even  then,  it’s  just  a  matter  of  time  before  something  gives  and  you’re  destroyed  by  your  own  power.    Like  a  star  collapsing  in  on  its  weight.    Anything  I  can  tell  you  about,  much  less  actually  teach  you,  would  be  a  stop-gap  at  best. ”
