The Nello and Patrasche statue, located in front of the Antwerp Cathedral, is commemorating the story of ‘A Dog of Flanders’ written by English novelist Ouida (the pseudonym of Marie Louise de la Ramée). As the story became famous in Japan and Korea and adapted into several films and anime, this statue was aslo donated by Japanese famous company, Toyota. - I’ll tell you a brief story about the statue. It is actually a sad-tragedy about Nello, an orphan boy, and his dog Patrasche which he found him when he almost beaten to death. They lives with Nello’s grandfather and help him selling milk. Nello falls in love with Aloise, the daughter of a well-off man in the village Nicholas. Lot of bad lucks happens to Nello: his grandfather died, he was accused of causing fire by Nicholas on one of his property, and had no place to stay. Then, he wishes to go to Antwerp’s Cathedral to see an exhibition of Rubens’ The Elevation of the Cross and The Descent of the Cross, but it’s only for paying customers and he’s out of money. On the night of Christmas Eve, by chance they sneak into the church.
