Casino dell'Aurora, Roma
"L'Aurora", esempio del classicismo barocco, è considerato il capolavoro di Guido Reni. L'affresco, alto 2.8 m e lungo 7, decora il soffitto dell'omonimo Casino di Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi a Roma.
I soggetti sono provenienti dalla mitologia greca. Da destra verso sinistra, vediamo l'Aurora vestita d'oro che precede Apollo sul suo carro trainato da quattro cavalli. Attorno a lui danzano le Ore, mentre al centro vola Fosforo, antica rappresentazione della stella della mattino, con una torcia in mano.
I toni caldi del giorno che arriva si contrappongono a quelli freddi e più cupi del paesaggio in basso. La fisionomia delle figure è idealizzata e fuori dal tempo, a sottolinearne la divinità.
L'autore si ispira all'arte classica greca e romana. Per esempio, la posa delle Ore prende spunto da un rilievo detto "delle Danzatrici Borghese", risalente all'epoca romana e raffigurante, appunto, le Ore che danzano accompagnate dalle Grazie.
