Sonic Youth Daydream Nation unofficial Russian release (1988, 1991)
Well, at least they try. Russia’s pirate label Antrop (АнТроп), named after famed underground producer Andrey Tropillo, did their part in issuing Daydream Nation to the Russian masses, though Tropillo had no part of it. Thurston Moore called the Enigma label a “cheap-jack mafioso outfit” for dropping the ball on Daydream Nation‘s release, and then you have this. First, Antrop neglected to use Gerhard Richter’s “Kurze” candle painting for a photo of a real one. Second, when it came to the album itself, they sacrificed “The Sprawl”, “Total Trash”, “Kissability” and the “Wonder / Hyperstation / Eliminator Jr.” trilogy. Sonic Youth’s landmark album for themselves and for the indie rock world ends up a truncated abbreviated affair when Antrop takes it with them. Instead, look for the deluxe quadruple vinyl or double disc versions with the complete album, live Daydream Nation performance, cover songs in “Within You Without You”, “Touch Me I’m Sick”, “Electricity” and “Computer Age”, and Ranaldo’s “Eric’s Trip” demo.
