Would you trust a bear that looks like this? FINISHED ART! >:]
Gentlemen of The Fuller Figure
Thinking about how weight gain, especially gaining body fat, is socially sanctioned in certain groups, particularly sports where largely cisgender heterosexual men are encouraged to become bigger. These gains are rarely framed as “getting fat” they’re more often described as gaining mass, moving up a weight class, getting bigger, etc.
It’s interesting how the exact same physical change can be interpreted so differently depending on who is doing it and why.
Fat stigma is also deeply rooted in racism, sexism, and class division, and the sports example is just one of many ways that social context shapes which bodies are considered acceptable, desirable, or even admirable.
People that push that envelope are fewer and further between. With the rise in use of GLP-1 drugs there is a push even further into appearing thinner and often underweight, which comes with its own types of medical problems and health concerns. The medication directly affects metabolism and is intended for use in people suffering from diabetes, obesity, and heart conditions. Obesity has complex and not well understood underlying causes, and weight loss should not be a one size fits all. All bodies, brains, genetic factors, should be considered and medical treatment should be focused on individual health. Not dishing out medication to whoever would like to change their appearance. All this does is promote disorderly behavior that is already horribly stigmatized.
That’s all
The American dream, but softer
