Julia Wolfe, a composer associated with the new-music collective Bang on a Can was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music for Anthracite Fields. First discovered in 1790 in Pottsville, anthracite coal spurred a mining industry, labor disputes, and energy for homes and trains. Its controversial nature has added to the folk lore of PA history that its descendants still carry today.
