Elisabete Matos (above) stars in Verdi's Don Carlo in Lisbon's opera house today, in a live transmission that has been eagerly awaited by many.
Critically acclaimed for her interpretation as Elisabetta di Valois in Giuseppe Verdi's monumental opera, the portuguese diva who recently had her Metropolitan Opera debut as Minnie in Puccini's La fanciulla del West (replacing Deborah Voigt), moves on to conquer her own country once more. The audience has reportedly gone crazy during opening night and despite some negative criticism towards the conductor and the production, it appears that Matos' vocal splendour and dramatic intensity have triumphed in making the São Carlos' current production of Don Carlo a major success.
On her facebook page, one reads comments like these:
"(...)What happened in São Carlos could have happened at the Met or at La scala or any other theatre (...). Her interpretation is definetely comparable to the best recordings we might own."
"Elisabete Matos was superb! (...) And I agree, the best Elisabetta of our days!"
Elisabete Matos made her professional debut as Donna Elvira in Mozart's Don Giovanni in Hamburg and has since sung in various opera houses including Milan's Teatro alla Scala (under Riccardo Muti), Washington National Opera (opposite Plácido Domingo), the Metropolitan Opera, Madrid's Teatro Real, Naples' Teatro di San Carlo, Opera di Roma, Barcelona's Liceu and recently her debut at the Salzburg Festival, among many others.
