For @anskeanske who asked for âLotus and Alice being buddiesâ. So here are Lotus and Alice making cookies together! I hope you enjoy it! Happy Holidays! <3Â
Ao3
The thing was, Lotus never really thought of herself as the maternal type. Sure she loved her girls more than anything in the world and would do literally anything for them, but she never thought of herself as a mother first. She was Hazuki Kashiwabara: free woman, programmer, and mother when it was called for. Never mind that âwhen it was called forâ was most of the time. And never mind that she loved almost every minute of it. Hazuki Kashiwaba was not maternal.
So when she was offered a position in the Silicon Valley, she spent maybe ten minutes going over the pros and cons of uprooting to California before deciding to take the job. (Con #1âpulling the girls from school and moving thousands of miles away from their friends. Pro#1âgirls get the incredible opportunity of living in a different country and are immersed in English while their brains are still like little spongesâThe decision was simple as far as she was concerned).
Okay, so maybe she made even major life decisions with her girls at the forefront of her mind. But that still didnât make her a Mother with a capital âMâ. She wasnât a PTA mom; sheâd never volunteered after school or gotten overly involved with the other mothers. She just didnât dothings like that. Which was why she couldnât quite believe that at 7:00pm on a Tuesday night, she was pulling out flour, eggs and milk to bake, instead of kicking back and watching TV with her girls, all on account of the fact that she had agreed to bring in cookies for the Christmas party the girlsâ class was having the next day.
And why were the girls not helping her? Because sheâd agreed that they could spend the night at a friendâs house as a special treat, seeing as the next day was a half-day, and the only thing happening at school was the Christmas party. But that didnât mean she had any intension of braving this project alone.
There was a knock at the door.
âOh thank god! Come in!â Lotus shouted in the direction of the door, as she arranged what she presumed were the necessary ingredients for cooking baking on her kitchen island.
âHey!â Alice called as she entered, slipping her shoes off. âIâm sorry Iâm a bit late. I decided to stop and pick up a bottle of wine.â
âNo, not at all, I think weâre going to need it.â
âThat bad, huh? Howâs it going in here?â
âUgh, I havenât really started. Why did I agree to this again?â
âI really couldnât say.â
âWell that one dad whose name I canât remember had already signed up to bring drinks, and apparently their teacherâs bringing plates and cups and things, so cookies seemed like the next easiest option.â
âYeah, Youâre probably right.â
âAnd then that blonde bitch, Sheryl. She looks me straight in the eyes and says âHazuki, have you ever made cookies before? Will you be okay?ââ
Alice laughed at the high-pitched simpering tone Lotus had affected and the look of outrage on her face. âShe probably just thought she was being nice.â
âIâm not sure that makes it any better. I mean theyâre cookies! How hard can it be?â
âWell, itâs definitely easier if you preheat the oven.â Alice responded with a smile, coming over and setting the oven for 350 degrees.
âI was getting to thatâŚâ Lotus muttered, folding her arms. âHow are your exams going?â She turned to get two glasses down from the cupboard.
âUgh, please! This is my mental health break. I donât want to think about any of the papers Iâm writing or tests Iâm prepping for. I will give you a full update once Iâve handed everything in.â
âUnderstandable. Well, let me know if you need me to read over anything though.â
âI will. Thanks.â
âHere.â Lotus said handing Alice a glass of wine and taking a sip of her own, âSo whatâs the first thing we need to do?â
ââIn a medium bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and saltâ. Have you measured out the ingredients yet?â
âNo, I guess Iâll do that now.â
âI guess you better.â
âHmm. I have baking powder. It looks like baking soda. Is it the same thing?â
âOh, honey, no. Not the same thing. Not at all. Baking sodaâs probably in a box.â Alice started going through Lotusâs cupboards while Lotus measured out the other ingredients. âHere you go! Baking powder!â
âThanks.â Lotus liked working with Aliceâeven if they were only working on simple things like making cookies. It was nice to have a friend she considered on the same intellectual footingâŚwell, that wasnât quite true. She knew that despite her best efforts to tone it down, Alice was light-years ahead of her intelligence wise. Perhaps what she really liked about Alice was the fact that Alice treated her like an intellectual equal. Which was more than she could say for most of her peers in her male-dominated field.
âAlright, next we want to mix the butter and sugar. Please tell me you have a mixer.â
âBelieve it or not I think I do.â
âIs it still in the box?â Alice asked with a smirk.
âI know youâre joking, but actually, yes it is.â Lotus said, pulling the box from the island cupboard.
Alice laughed. âWhy do you have it?â
âOh, somebody gave it to me when we moved inâŚDo you think we need to wash it first?â
âNo, itâs probably fine. Though we could rinse the metal mixing bits with warm water.â
âYeah, alright.â
Mixer assembled and whirring away at beating together the sugar and butter, Lotus looked up from the bowl and said to Alice, âSo you donât want to talk about school.â
âNo, itâs my night off. No school.â
âOkay then. What have you been up to? Any clandestine encounters with gentlemen?â Lotus asked suggestively. Â Â Â
âFirst off, way to sound like my motherââ Alice wished she could have captured the look on Hazukiâs face at her wordsââand secondly, yes, but not in the way youâre thinking.â
Lotus raised an eyebrow. âLadies then?â
Alice grinned like the cat who got the cream. âThatâs neither here nor there. Iâm not talking about romantic encounters.â
âWhat kind of encounters are you talking about then?â Lotus said with a frown.
âThese weird men keep showing up to interview me for something.â
âWeird how?â
âOh you know, creepy, mysterious government agency types. Like spies: black ties, black suits, dark sunglasses, the whole nine yards.â
âAnd they want to recruit you?â
âPresumably. But I canât tell if theyâre CIA or FBI or what.â
âOdd. And you think itâs okay to tell me about this?â
Alice shrugged. âWell they didnât tell me not to.â
Lotus clicked off the mixer, butter and sugar thoroughly mixed, and looked at Alice. âAnd do you think youâll take a job with the government?â
âWell, that depends on what they can do for me.â
Lotus chewed her bottom lip. Alice was so incredibly mature in many ways. It was often easy to forget that she was a whole decade younger than Lotus. She was smart, but despite her maturity, she could be a little reckless. Especially when she got focused on something.
âAlice, Iâm not your mother, so Iâm not going to tell you what to do, but just be careful, okay?â
Alice looked away. âYeah, I know.â
Lotus nodded. âNow these eggs, do they just sit here or are we going to mix them in?â
âI guess they could just sit there, but then we would without a doubt have made the shittiest cookies ever.â
âAnd I canât have Nona and Ennea showing up to school with the shittiest cookies of all time. What kind of mother would that make me?â
âProbably exactly the kind of mother the other moms suspect you might be.â
âIâll drink to that!â Lotus said, bringing her wine to her lips.
Eggs cracked and stirred in with a splash of vanilla, they moved on to mixing in the wet and dry ingredients.
âSo, secret government agency interviews. What are those like?â Lotus asked, stirring while Alice held the bowl and periodically added more of the flour mixture to the batter.
âSecretive. I donât know. They asked a lot of questions about me and my family. Which I suppose is to be expected. But then they asked a lot of really strange questions.â
âWhat kind of strange questions?â
âLike, âwhat did I know about the works of Sheldrake?ââ
âWho?â
âYeah, Iâd never come across him either, but I did some research after my interview.â
âIs he a scientist?â
âPseudo-scientist.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean his field is parapsychology.â
âLike telepathy kind of things?â
âActually, yes.â
âYouâre kidding me!â
âNot at allâItâs not really telepathy the way we usually think of it. But he has this theory about âmorphic resonanceâ. Itâs this idea about humanity having a shared memoryâa consciousness that we could all potentially tap into.â
âThat sounds like bullshit.â
âYeah, I kind of thought so, too.â
âSo why do you think they were asking about Sheldrake?â
âI donât know. Maybe if Iâd known a lot about him, theyâd have figured I was crazy and written me off as a potential candidate.â
Lotus laughed. âYeah, most likely.â She stopped mixing the cookie dough. âDoes this look good enough to you?â
âYes, I think we can go ahead and start putting them on the tray.â
âAlright and then only fifteen minutes in the oven!â
âSounds good!â
âYou know,â Lotus said as she slid two trays of cookies into the oven, âwhen I first moved in here I couldnât get over the size of the oven. I couldnât imagine what I would need with an oven this big. And then I realized all of the houses here have ovens this size! But now that I have to bake all these cookies Iâm so glad we have an oven this size.â
âWhat can I tell you, we Americans love our baking.â
âAre you going home for Christmas?â
âYes. Iâll be heading home as soon as exams are over.â
âThatâll be nice.â
âYeah, Iâm looking forward to seeing my mom.â
âI bet. And Iâm sure sheâs looking forward to seeing you.â
Alice grinned, âYeah, definitely.â
Lotus looked around the kitchen. âWell we could clean up this mess, but I vote we watch a movie instead.â
âAre you sure?â
âAbsolutely.â Lotus said, nodding. âDid you bring âLove Actuallyâ?â
âOf course I did! Iâm not going to let you get away with having never seen it.â
âAlright, alright.â
All in all it was an excellent evening, Lotus thought. The cookies didnât burn and were not only edible, but delicious, and she enjoyed the movie a lot more than sheâd thought she would. Aliceâs description hadnât made it sound nearly as interesting as it was. It was nearly midnight by the time Alice left.
âBye, sweetie!â Lotus said, seeing her off, âIf you need anything, call! And tell your Mom I said hello!â
âI will. And Iâll see you when I get back! Merry Christmas, Hazuki!â
âMerry Christmas, Alice.â
By this point, Lotus had long forgotten Aliceâs mention of Sheldrake and morphic resonance theory in that way we tend to forget about the unimportant details of our day. It would only be a few more years from now before she would come across that name again. Though the next time she wouldnât just forget it; it would hold a lot more importance. But she had an awful lot of things to do before then.
