Gotico-Antiqua / Workshop with Jérôme Knebusch & Thomas Huot-Marchand,      Workshop conducted with students in years 3 to 5 of the graphic design option, in partnership with the National Typographic Research Workshop (ANRT Nancy) and the Study and Heritage Library of the City of Toulouse from 12 to 16 February 2018. The workshop is part of ANRT's "Gotico-Antiqua" research program. In this context, workshops were also conducted in Mulhouse, Valence, Mainz, Saarbrücken and Lyon.      The 16 isdaT students, accompanied by 2 postgraduate students researchers at the ANRT and the teachers, initially analyzed an incunable (book printed before the year 1500 and drawn with few copies), at the Library of Study and Heritage. The students then discovered one of the earliest fonts designed in Toulouse by Johann Parix in 1475. This lettering is characterized by a transitional design, including a double set of Gothic and Roman capitals that the printer used within the same text.      The character of Parix will then be traced and reinterpreted with several phases of analog design to help understand the gesture and intention of the engraver in the design of letters. The last step is the adaptation of the drawings to digital, several students follow one another on the same letter, which allows an homogeneous and progressive refinement of forms.      This vast project of typographic revival makes it possible to make the ancestral lettering of Parix accessible and usable by all. ,      Workshop mené auprès des étudiants en années 3 à 5 de l’option design graphique, en partenariat avec l’Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT Nancy) et la Bibliothèque d’Étude et du Patrimoine de la Ville de Toulouse du 12 au 16 février 2018.
 Le workshop fait partie du programme de recherche « Gotico-Antiqua » de l’ANRT. Dans ce cadre, des ateliers ont également été menés à Mulhouse, Valence, Mayence, Sarrebruck et Lyon.
      Les 16 étudiants de l’isdaT, accompagnés de 2 étudiants chercheurs en post-diplôme à l’ANRT et des intervenants, ont dans un premier temps analysé un incunable (ouvrage imprimé antérieur à l’année 1500 et tiré à peu d'exemplaires), à la Bibliothèque d’Étude et du Patrimoine.
Les étudiants découvrent alors l’une des toutes premières fontes conçues à Toulouse par Johann Parix, en 1475. Ce lettrage se caractérise par un dessin transitoire, avec notamment un double jeu de capitales inédit gothiques et romaines que l’imprimeur utilisait au sein d’un même texte.      Le caractère de Parix sera ensuite décalqué puis réinterprété dans les ateliers des Beaux-Arts avec plusieurs phases de dessin analogiques qui permettent de comprendre le geste et l’intention du graveur lors de la conception des lettres.
La dernière étape est l’adaptation des dessins au numérique, plusieurs étudiants se succèdent sur une même lettre, ce qui permet l’affinement homogène et progressif des formes.

      Ce vaste projet de revival typographique permet de rendre le lettrage ancestral de Parix accessible et utilisable par tous. Work in progress here
