but first, here are my tags, because yeah.

#fma#i don't.... get why everyone is freaking out about this#like do you know how many live action adaptions of anime and manga japan does every year?#do you know how many have huge-ass budgets#like yes with WBjp (because it is WB JAPAN and not WB USA) doing production it's going to be huge#but they were also the ones who did the ruroken films and the death note films?#just because it says warner brothers on it does not mean it's going to be a gigantic US box office hit#hell it doesn't even mean it's going to get a US theatre run#i would be SURPRISED if it got US releases of ANY kind before the full japanese theatre run and DVD/BR releases#i'm glad that people are excited#but this will be a japanese movie and not any sort of US or worldwide release until long after it's come out in japan#be excited and support international film please for the love of god#even this early on in the production they are definitely looking at their international audiences#but it's first and foremost a japanese film for a japanese audience#i stg if people start critiquing it through a US-centric lens i'm going to puke on them#like already reading through some of the tags on this post#people don't quite understand what is happening#whoops my inner film major took over#rant over

and i’m glad to hear that that’s the critique you’re hearing in japan, because even a few years ago it would have just been… ignored? japan doesn’t generally play nicely in the international film market for most of their films. and it seems to be relatively on purpose for the most part. and yeah, of course there are things like the studio ghibli films that will get larger releases internationally, but a lot of the other stuff that does get licensed in the US/Europe is niche market, art house, pink cinema, or festival circuit and unavailable otherwise (which is ANNOYING because the festival circuit ones are usually the ones i have an interest in). point being, (and i am sure you are surprised by none of this, knowing you) the japanese film market is incredibly insular, and even though the anime industry recognized the importance of the international market to some extent, the film industry has yet to expand in the same way.

it’s like snsd are my kids who went to college out of state and ofc i still drop everything when they come back on breaks but the rest of the time i was coming home to this sad empty nest and my house finally got too quiet to bear
