BEFORE THE BEGINNING â three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project
âYâknow, for an early riser, you stay up pretty damn late.âÂ
Paige glanced backwards. It was the middle of the night, and she was awake-- though not for lack of trying to sleep. Sheâd gone to lay down in the bunkhouse of this settlement at a reasonable time, maybe even caught an hour... but after that?
She couldnât sleep. She was wound up with the kind of anxious energy that refused to let her hold still, and without anything to self medicate with? Sheâd taken the stairs up out of the bunkhouse to pace back and forth along the railed edge of the roof.Â
She hadnât even noticed Nick was up there when she came up, sitting at one of the tables beneath the covered portion of what was essentially an open-air cantina above the bunkhouse. It wasnât until he spoke to her that she turned around and saw his eyes glowing in the dark... and she found herself tongue-tied for any sort of sly comeback.
âYou still all twisted up in your head?â
â... I donât know.âÂ
Sheâd turned more than her head his way. She abandoned her pacing, crossing the rooftop to arrive at his table, setting herself in the chair across from him. She felt stiff. Graceless. Tense.Â
It wasnât because of what sheâd done anymore. What went down with Kellogg? Sheâd worked through that. Or at least she thought she had. It was just something heâd staid that still stuck around, rattling between her ears until the words nearly lost all meaning.Â
That if she found her son, sheâd have to do the right thing.
â... thinkinâ about turning back?â Valentine wondered.Â
Was she? That really was the only other option at this point, wasnât it? To drop it, stop chasing this, stop chasing Shaun, and just... accept what her life was now.Â
He let out a chuckle; soft and knowing. âGood. Woulda had to whap you over the head if you started talking about quitting now. We should make Goodneighbor by tomorrow-- you should head back down. Get some rest.âÂ
Goodneighbor. Another new place, but sheâd heard about it. Nothing positive, but sheâd withhold judgement until arrival.Â
âDonât mention it.âÂ
