The result from Sunday is indeed scary and I'm especially worried on how the AfD manages to double (sometimes more) its vote share in the West German states, while "only" improving their results in former East Germany by 1.5 times... And having been a poll worker this year and seeing the AfD get just over 21 percent of the votes (above the national and state average) and seeing how NORMAL most voters were being...
It's not great.
I'm hoping, partially against hope, that the next few years will involve a lot of changes that will cause AfD support to decline without any attempts to outright mimic AfD policies by the incoming Merz administration. But for that the living situation needs to improve for everyday people, especially in rural and formerly-industrial areas, and ideally the media also does a pivot and drastically alters its approach to political content and content covering crime.
In the meantime... It's not a bad idea to focus on a close friend group and to find safety in numbers, if you can. Also, if possible, do your commute with friends if that might ease your mind. We gotta stick together.
And regarding young men specifically... I'm seeing a general gender-based ideological gap in multiple countries: the US, South Korea, the UK, etc... It's sadly not a regional phenomenon. Still, I get your question regarding trust. I can imagine that being very difficult right now. Maybe they'll reveal themselves to be fickle or swayable. But until we as a society can know, caution is indeed sensible, especially if you appear as anything BUT an able-bodied, straight, white cis-dude. Which fucking sucks. I wouldn't wanna be in a situation where young men were my (primary) dating pool, for example.
