Summary:Â Five years into their relationship, Derek takes Stiles to the place where the Hale family often celebrated winter solstice and Derekâs birthday. Stiles knows the trip will bring back a lot of memories for Derek, but both of them end up getting so much more out of it than they ever could have expected.
My Eternalsterek Secret Santa 2017 fic for @kewismash! Lots of Hale family memories/holiday traditions, plus fluff and cuddling and presents...and background Peter/Sheriff.
As he turned off onto a mountain road that was clearly seldom used, Stiles couldnât help glancing over at Derek, dozing beside him in the passenger seat. It had been a little over five years since theyâd officially started dating, but it still sometimes took Stiles by surprise when he got to see Derek completely unguarded, especially when they were far away from home.
Knowing Derek wanted to be awake for the last part of the drive, Stiles reluctantly reached over and gave his knee a gentle squeeze. Derek stirred and murmured something that sounded vaguely like a question.
âWeâre almost there,â Stiles said, drumming his fingers up Derekâs thigh. âYou said you wanted me to wake you, remember?â
âMmm.â Derek finally opened his eyes and glanced at their surroundings before giving Stiles a soft smile. âStill looks the same as I remember it.â
âReally?â
âYeah,â Derek said around an aborted yawn, stretching his arms out until his palms were flat on the dash. âThis was always our favorite part. Dad would wake us up when Mom turned back this road, and weâd be so excited by the time we got there. Usually ended up chasing each other around the paths near the lodge while Mom got us checked in.â The memory brought another smile to Derekâs face, and Stiles grinned in return.
It still touched him to hear Derek talking about his family so openly, with happy, unburdened memories instead of guilt-ridden ones. After the deaths of Kate and Gerard (and their subsequent incineration by Peter for good measure), Derek had started to truly heal, but it was still another two years into their relationship before heâd started opening up and revealing more of his past.
The first time heâd shared something big with Stiles, a story about a family trip to the lake, Derek had been in tears by the end, but heâd been smiling â a beautiful, open smile, the likes of which Stiles had never really seen on Derekâs face in the past.
Itâd gotten easier for him over time, but opening up like that was still somewhat of a rarity, and Stiles was grateful for every story, every memory.
It had been one of those stories, in fact, that had inspired their holiday getaway. The summer before last, during one of Coraâs visits, sheâd been telling Stiles about a place where the Hale family had loved to spend Christmas â and sometimes other holidays as well. Though they didnât observe the religious aspect of Christmas, they used it as an occasion for spending time together as a family and pack, celebrating the winter solstice and the changes it brought, letting their wolves run free.
They stayed at an isolated getaway deep in the wilds of Washington state, a massive property run by a small pack who made sure to keep prying eyes far enough away that the wolves didnât have to worry. The Hales had loved it there, according to both Cora and Derek, but none of them had been back since the fire.
Maybe we could go there this Christmas? Stiles had suggested back then, fascinated by the idea of such a place. Derekâs only response, though, had been to get up and walk away without a word, leaving Stiles to wonder if heâd screwed things up. Heâd found Derek on the back deck, looking out over their yard and the woods beyond. Derek, I â
Itâs okay, Derek had said, turning to wrap Stiles in a warm embrace. I justâŠmaybe next year?
Stiles had readily agreed, though he hadnât really expected it to happen. Heâd been floored, then, when Derek had not only suggested the getaway a year later, but had even followed through with reservations, plane tickets, and a rented Grand Cherokee.
âThere it is,â Derek said, pulling Stiles from his thoughts. He followed Derekâs finger to what looked to be a tribal design of a howling wolf, carved into a well-weathered post at the side of the dirt road. As they passed the carving and continued toward what looked to be a large log cabin in the distance, Stiles noticed Derek growing anxious, and by the time they pulled up in front of the building, Stiles was more than a little concerned.
âDerek?â Stiles shut off the Jeep and reached over to cover one of Derekâs hands with his own.
âIâm good,â Derek said, his voice steady. He looked over at Stiles, and though his eyes were shining, he didnât look as emotional as Stiles had expected. âIâm â itâs a lot, you know?â He turned his hand, threading his fingers through Stilesâ own. âBut Iâm glad weâre here. It feels right.â
âGood.â Stiles hesitated, not wanting to press the issue, not wanting to make Derek think that maybe he should be more freaked out about being there. Still, he needed to make sure Derek knew they werenât obligated to stay. âIf that changes, though ââ
âIâll tell you. I will.â That soft smile returned to Derekâs face, and he tugged on Stilesâ hand, pulling him over for a quick kiss.
âWe should probably go check in, then.â Stiles nodded toward the lodgeâs front porch, where an elderly couple stood watching them. âLooks like the welcoming committee is here.â
Derekâs eyes widened, and after giving Stiles another quick peck, he climbed out of the Jeep. Stiles followed, getting out just in time to hear the woman gasp Derekâs name as she hurried down the steps to wrap him in a fierce hug. The man took his time, easing his way down the steps before giving Stiles a small, but warm smile.
âIâm so happy youâre here,â the woman said to Derek, her voice wavering. She backed away just far enough to run her hands up and down his arms. âI still canât believe it.â
To Stilesâ surprise, not only did Derek seem comfortable with the contact and the attention, but he was still smiling, warm and beautiful. He shared a shorter, but still amiable, hug with the man as well before turning his attention back to Stiles.
âStiles, this is Trudy and Walt Lowell. They and their pack run this place. Trudy and Walt, this is my boyfriend, Stiles Stilinski.â
âPleasure to meet you,â Walt said, extending a hand for Stiles to shake. Trudy, whoâd already shown herself to be more of the hugging type, embraced Stiles just long enough to be comfortable, and just firmly enough for him to realize that, while her husband looked to be human, she was definitely a werewolf.
âWell, come on inside,â Trudy said as she stepped back to look them over from head to toe. âLetâs get you checked in.â
Coffee-Flavored Kisses (and a Bit of Conversation)
Derek/Stiles | 3800 words | Teen | Also on AO3
Written for @dragon-temeraire, who prompted me for an "I crashed on your couch after the party, and in the morning you made me breakfast" AU. Basically just fluff without plot.
Finally, finally, he had a four-day weekend all to himself, and heâd hoped to spend as much of it as possible sleeping. Or napping. Or relaxing.
That, of course, was before Derek texted to invite him to a small get-together at his new place on the same weekend. It was a few hours north of where Stiles lived, and he hadnât realized quite how exhausted he would be when he accepted, but he also didnât want to back out because it was Derek.
Derek, who had finally come out the other side of his own personal hell, not only still in one piece, but at peace with himself and his past. Derek, who couldnât quite bring himself to move back to anywhere in Beacon County, but whoâd at least returned to the state and had found a beautiful place in a small town near the forests of northern California.
It had been half a decade since Stiles had last seen Derek. Exhaustion or not, there was no way he was missing the chance.
Fueled by a large Turbo Shot, Stiles was still relatively awake by the time he pulled up in front of Derekâs house, a cabin set back away from the road, and about a half-mile from the nearest neighbor. Everyone was parked on a stone-covered area next to the house, and Stiles pulled in next to Scott and Kiraâs SUV. He didnât recognize any of the other vehicles and wasnât sure who else would be there, but he doubted heâd be very social once the caffeine wore off anyway. With a sigh, he grabbed the housewarming gift from the passenger seat and headed for the front door.
Before Stiles even got a chance to knock, the door opened to reveal Derek himself.
âStiles.â His name slipped from Derekâs mouth on a relieved exhale, and a familiar pair of strong arms pulled him into a warm, if totally unexpected, embrace.
âHey, Derek,â Stiles said softly as he returned the hug, careful not to smack Derek in the back with the large gift bag.
âGod, itâs good to see you.â Derek turned his face into Stilesâ neck, breathing deeply, and Stiles wasnât quite sure what to do with that. He just knew he was tired, and the warmth of the other manâs body felt so good that he let himself sink into it. Derekâs arms tightened around him briefly before pulling away. âYou look good.â
âSo do you,â Stiles admitted, and it was true. Derek looked great, healthy and smiling, his hair just a little longer than Stiles remembered. This somewhat softer version of Derek was already threatening to dredge up old feelings, so Stiles distracted himself by giving Derek the gift bag. âI, uh, got you this. Housewarming present.â
Derek took the bag, looking a little startled. âThank you. You didnât have to do that.â
âItâs not much. I just thought youâd like it.â Stiles shifted and jammed his hands into his pockets.
Derek pulled the gift out of the bag and peeled away the loosely-wrapped tissue paper to reveal a framed print of an antique moon chart. As he looked it over, Stiles felt a sudden pang of uncertainty. What if Derek thought it was a joke, a gag gift because he was a wolf? Before the anxiety itself had a chance to take hold, though, Derek looked up at him with a soft smile.
âItâs beautiful. Thanks, Stiles.â He locked the front door, then motioned for Stiles to follow him into the living room, where he sat the print up on the mantel above the fireplace. âI think I want to hang it above the sofa when I get a chance, but this is a good spot for now.â He stepped back to stand next to Stiles with a satisfied nod.
âIâm glad you like it,â Stiles said, still a little stunned by Derekâs reaction. He knew Derek had changed â hell, the guy invited everyone to his house â but he was going to need a minute to reconcile this Derek with the one heâd known year ago.
Derek gave his shoulder a squeeze. âAre you sure youâre up for this? You seem pretty tired.â
âYeah, itâs been a long month.â He glanced over at Derek, who was giving him a concerned look. âI ââ
âHey, Derek, whatâs taking so long?â Scott appeared in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen. âYou need to share Stiles with the rest of us, man.â Scott wrapped Stiles in a quick hug before giving him a slap on the back and leading him in the direction of the patio doors at the other side of the kitchen. âCome on, everyone else is out back waiting for you guys.â
Stiles glanced over his shoulder to see Derek following closely, his cheeks a little pink. Stiles was too tired to figure out exactly what that meant, and Scott wasnât giving him a chance anyway.
The gathering was small but lively, and Stiles started to feel better almost immediately. Derekâs backyard was big and beautiful, and after the weeks spent mostly cooped up inside plus the long drive, the fresh air and wide open space was just what he needed.
âItâs so beautiful here,â Stiles finally said, closing his eyes and tilting his face up toward the late afternoon sun.
âYeah. It is.â
Something in Derekâs voice made Stiles glance over, only to find Derek looking back at him with an easy smile on his face. Stiles returned it, warmth spreading through his chest. Heâd felt a camaraderie with Derek back in their early years, and it had definitely morphed into something much deeper before they parted ways in Mexico, but Stiles hadnât let himself dwell on the could-have-beens for long. He always figured that if there was really something there, theyâd find the right time and place to make it work.
He gave Derek a gentle nudge. âThanks for doing this. Itâs been good seeing everyone again.â He hesitated, quirking an eyebrow. âI never thought Iâd be saying this, but I was even glad to see Jackson. He really mellowed out.â
Derek nodded, his gaze straying to the volleyball game. âJackson figured out whatâs important.â
âSeems to be a lot of that going around.â
Derek ducked his head, but Stiles could see a smile lifting the corners of his mouth. âYeah.â This time it was Derek who leaned in, lightly knocking their arms together. âI think youâre right.â
âWell, of course I am,â Stiles replied, and Derek let out a soft chuckle. They turned their attention back to the game, but Derek didnât move away, and it wasnât long until the warmth of his body started to make Stiles dangerously drowsy. After catching himself nearly falling asleep on Derekâs shoulder for the second time in as many minutes, Stiles forced himself to sit up.
âI, uh, Iâm gonna go use your bathroom.â
âSure.â Derek looked up at him as Stiles stood and shook out his limbs. âFirst door on the left back the hallway.â
Stiles nodded and made his way inside, easily finding the bathroom in spite of his bleary eyes. When he was done, he splashed some water on his face and rubbed at his cheeks with his wet hands, but it did little to make him feel more awake. With a long sigh, he dried his face and walked out into the hallway.
He hadnât exactly planned on snooping around Derekâs house, but the door to the room across the hall from the bathroom was open, and Stiles caught a glimpse of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Curious, he leaned into the room, and with the faint light coming from the hallway, he could see that the shelves took up an entire wall. There were already countless books on the shelves, as well as a couple of framed photos and some assorted odds and ends that Stiles couldnât quite make out. Various boxes sat on the floor nearby, presumably full of the books that Derek hadnât yet unpacked.
Stiles pushed away the urge to turn on the light and browse Derekâs book collection, instead letting his gaze drift around the rest of the room. There was a desk and laptop computer, as well as a filing cabinet. And tucked against the wall opposite the one with the bookshelves was a large, very cushy-looking sofa.
He tried to force himself to walk away, to go back out and socialize with the friends he hadnât seen in years. But Stiles was way beyond exhausted, and the sofa looked so inviting, hidden in the silence and darkness, long enough for him to stretch out on, with big throw pillows that â no.
Even as he tried to talk himself out of it, Stiles drifted toward the sofa. Maybe he could just sit there for a few minutes and relax in peace before going back out to face everyone. He could also go crash in Derekâs guest room instead, but he had no idea how many there were, or if Derek had invited anyone else to stay, as heâd done with Stiles when heâd texted about the get-together.
Had Derek invited anyone else? Were they all staying at the nearest motel? He thought he remembered Scott mentioning something about a room in town. What about Cora, though? She was family. Or Jackson and Isaac. Wouldnât Derek want them close?
Stiles fell back onto the sofa, heels of his hands pressed against his eyes, andâŠoh.
It was just as comfortable as it looked, if not more. There was no way he was getting up anytime soon.
He was vaguely aware of kicking off his shoes and pulling his feet up on the sofa, his head sinking into one of those plush throw pillows, and then nothing.
-------------
Sometime during the night, a low, soothing voice pulled Stiles back to the edges of wakefulness, but only barely. He opened his eyes just far enough to make out Derek kneeling in front of him, hand resting on Stilesâ shoulder.
âYouâre welcome to stay on the sofa all night,â Derek murmured, thumb stroking over the thin fabric of Stilesâ shirt. âIf you change your mind and want to switch to a bed, the room on the left at the end of the hall is made up for you.â
âMmmkaythanks.â His muzzy brain wouldnât let him get out anything more coherent, but Derek gave him a smile and stood, so it must have been enough. Stiles allowed his eyes to fall shut again, and he was almost so far gone that he missed it â the feeling of lips brushing across his forehead.
He wanted to stop Derek and ask him if it really happened and what it meant, if it meant anything at all.
In the morning.
-------------
Stiles awoke to sunlight streaming in through the blinds at the back of the room, illuminating everything in a soft white glow. He blinked a few times as he took stock of how he was feeling. There was a slight twinge in his lower back, but nothing that couldnât be stretched away, and he could really use a shower.
Most importantly, he felt well-rested for the first time in weeks.
He slipped across the hall into the bathroom, where a towel and washcloth were already waiting for him on the vanity, Derekâs familiar scrawl on the note next to them.
Your bagâs in the guest room. Breakfast will be ready when you are. - D
For some reason, that personal touch left Stiles feeling warm and a little giddy. He found the guest room and grabbed his toothbrush and a change of clothes before heading back to shower.
Stiles was halfway through his shower, trying not to feel weird about using Derekâs shampoo and body wash, when it came back to him.
A hand on his shoulder. A fond smile. Lips on his forehead.
Fuck.
Stiles finished showering as quickly as he could, then dried off and got dressed, his mind reeling. Had those things really happened during the night, or had his sleep-deprived brain concocted it all? He had no reason to believe it hadnât been real. After all, heâd remembered the directions to the guest room, and Derek had been sweet to him the entire evening.
But still, kissing him? Okay, so it wasnât on the lips, but it was somewhere on his face, so it counted as something in Stilesâ book.
As he headed down the hallway, Stiles could hear noises from the kitchen, and the unmistakable smell of bacon made his mouth water. He stopped just out of view of the kitchen, though, still debating over whether he should wait for Derek to bring it up or come right out and ask.
âStiles?â Derek stepped into view at the end of the hallway, spatula in hand. He was wearing only a faded blue t-shirt and thin black lounge pants, and seeing him immediately put Stiles as ease. âHey.â
âHey. Smells great out here.â Stiles followed Derek back to the kitchen and sat down at the small breakfast bar.
âYeah, I wasnât sure what you might want.â Derek glanced over his shoulder as he spoke, then turned his attention back to the stove, where he was melting butter in a frying pan. He looked totally comfortable in the kitchen, something that surprised Stiles, though he couldnât put his finger on why. âI know you love bacon, so thereâs bacon. Iâve got stuff ready for omelets, or if youâd rather have pancakes, I can get some batter going.â
Stiles had to force himself not to gape. It wasnât like he hadnât realized that Derek had changed. That had been more than obvious from the moment Stiles arrived. But this Derek was moving around the kitchen like he belonged there and was making him breakfast, offering him choices, even. This Derek was at home, settled, no longer on the run. The realization soothed something deep inside Stiles.
âUm, omelets sound perfect,â he finally answered. âI love pancakes, but I usually eat so many that I get sleepy again, so I save them for lazy days.â
Derek turned and gave him that same soft smile heâd seen more than once the previous day. âMy grandma used to call that being logy.â
The casual mention of one of Derekâs family members caught Stiles off-guard, but he recovered quickly enough to keep the conversation going. âI didnât think it would affect werewolves, you know, because of the metabolism.â
âNo,â Derek said as he grabbed a plate of various chopped vegetables from the counter, âmy human grandma.â And then, as if he hadnât just casually slipped a family anecdote into the conversation, he held the plate out to Stiles. âWhat do you want in your omelet?â
âI â uh, a little of everything.â He didnât want to push, but the fact that Derek readily shared the grandma thing made Stiles feel comfortable enough to ask. âSo your grandma was human?â
âThe one on my dadâs side, yeah.â Derek sprinkled some black pepper and dill into the eggs he was beating in a bowl, throwing glances over his shoulder at Stiles as he spoke. âMomâs mom was a wolf.
âNice.â Stiles rubs a thumb over the marble countertop. âBoth of my grandmothers were human.â
Derek hummed in assent as he poured the egg mixture into the pan. âAs far as you know, anyway.â
âThatâs a valid point. I didnât even know about werewolves until I was sixteen.â
Derek acknowledged that with a tilt of his head, but said nothing. They lapsed into silence until the food was done, then wasted no time digging in.
âThis is great,â Stiles said, honestly impressed with Derekâs cooking. Heâd never seen Derek cook back in their earlier years, but then again, he hadnât seen Derek do much of anything that could be considered domestic back when they first knew each other. Things had changed so much since then, mostly for the better.
Derek nodded his thanks as he took a sip of coffee. âYou want anything else with it? Toast, English muffin?â
âNo, Iâm good. Thanks, though.â He bit into a slice of bacon, crispy and perfect, and groaned in appreciation. âWhereâd you learn to cook like this?â
âWhen I was a kid, I used to like to get up early in the morning to go running. Iâd get back and shower, and Mom would be making breakfast. Sheâd always let me help with something. It was kind of our thing, I guess.â
When Stiles glanced up from his plate, Derek was looking right at him, a small smile on his face. Stiles returned it, and Derek ducked his head, though not quite quickly enough to hide his widening grin. It warmed something in Stiles, seeing Derek happy, seeing him comfortable enough to talk about his family so openly. He still wanted to ask about the night before, but he wasnât sure how Derek would react, and he didnât want to risk ruining the moment.
It wasnât until they were finished eating and were lingering at the breakfast bar over their second cups of coffee that Stiles finally took the chance.
âSo, uh, last night, when you woke me up ââ
âI meant it,â Derek blurted, a flush already starting high on his cheekbones.
âWhen you kissed me?â At Derekâs nod, Stiles grinned. âOh good, so I wasnât imagining it?â
âNo, IâŠâ Derek trailed off and tapped his finger against the rim of his mug. âI was planning on telling you yesterday. How I fâ â He cut himself off, but Stiles already knew the rest of the sentence. How I feel about you. âGod, Iâm bad at this.â He huffed out a sheepish laugh and shook his head.
Without really thinking about it, Stiles reached across and wrapped his fingers around Derekâs. He gave him a reassuring smile, and Derek returned it.
âI didnât realize youâd be so tired when you got here. I couldnâtâŠI couldnât lay all of that on you when you looked like you were barely functioning.â
âHey, now,â Stiles teased, and Derek laughed.
âYou were asleep on your feet, Stiles, come on.â Derekâs expression softened. âIt wouldâve felt like I was taking advantage of you. And then when I found you in the study, you just looked so peaceful that I didnât even want to wake you at all.â He took a deep breath and blew it out slowly.
âWell, Iâm awake now.â
âYou are.â
âAnd since the bacon didnât bring anyone else out for breakfast, Iâm guessing weâre alone.â
Derek nodded, giving Stilesâ fingers a squeeze. âEveryone else is at a hotel in Redding.â
âGood to know.â Stiles slipped off the stool and walked around the bar. Derek turned to meet him, spreading his knees far enough for Stiles to step in between them. âSo if Iâd been more awake last night â you know, like I am now â what else would you have done?â
Derek just watched him for a long moment, and Stiles held that gaze, hoping he was doing enough to convey that he was okay with whatever Derek wanted. Derekâs hands ran down Stilesâ sides before coming to rest on his hips, and his eyes searched Stilesâ face.
âYouâre sure?â
âOh, youâd better believe I am.â
Almost before the words were out of Stilesâ mouth, Derek leaned in to kiss him. It was soft, gentle, fitting for the man Derek had become since theyâd last spent time together. Stiles brought a hand up to Derekâs neck, thumb stroking over his jaw. Derek let out a little moan, his mouth opening, and Stiles deepened the kiss.
They made out for countless minutes, and though Derek was definitely into it if the moaning was anything to go by, he didnât seem to be in much of a hurry to move things along. Not that Stiles minded. Kissing Derek was so much better than he ever could have imagined â and when he had imagined it, it had been pretty damn hot.
When they finally came up for air, Derek dropped his forehead to Stilesâ shoulder, chuckling softly.
âWhatâs so funny?â Stiles managed to ask after a few deep breaths.
âYouâre even better at that than I thought youâd be. Surprised me.â
Stiles opened his mouth to defend himself, then shut it again as the implication behind those words dawned on him.
âYouâŠyou mean youâve thought about this?â
Derek put his hands on Stilesâ shoulders, pushing him away just far enough to look into his eyes. âIâve thought about this a lot,â he replied with a grin.
âReally?â Stiles couldnât help smirking at him. âWhat else have you thought about?â
Derek slipped off the stool, his body sliding against Stilesâ in a way that made Stiles shiver. He wrapped his arms around Stilesâ waist and leaned in to mouth at his neck.
âAll sorts of things,â he breathed against Stilesâ damp skin. âWhy donât we take this somewhere a little more comfortable, and Iâll show you a few of them.â
In the end, they didnât make it any farther than the sofa in Derekâs living room â which, as Stiles was delighted to discover, was just as amazing as the one in the study.
I was tagged by @cobrilee to post the last sentence of one of my WIPs - thanks for the tag! :)
I havenât been doing much writing lately - a combination of anxiety-induced exhaustion, working full-time, and eclipse preparation - but Iâve made some progress on a Starrish road trip fic (*nudges @inell*), so hereâs the current last sentence from that:
âSo why donât you come along? I could use the company.âÂ
Yep, thatâs all. *shrug*
Iâm also still working on the Sterek White Collar AU, so hereâs one for that, since I know most you are here for the Sterek. ;)
Heâd seen Stiles play the victim before, but this wasnât it.
As always, tagging anyone who wants to do this! If you claim a tag from me, tag me so I can read/reblog! :)
Itâs still Thursday in a small part of the world, so hereâs my contribution for day 6 ( How to Kiss a Boy - Stiles/male) of Shipping With Stiles Week 2017! Also, surprise - I wrote a non-Sterek fic! ;)
Bring a Wild Man Back Home | Stiles/Parrish | Explicit | 4k | Also on AO3
Stiles ran through the preserve, losing himself in the peacefulness of the early morning and the steady rhythm of his shoes pounding in the dirt. He was alone, on a seldom-used trail that was closed to the general public (and far away from the nemeton), and the weather couldnât have been better. A smile flirted with the corners of his mouth as he thought back to his high school days, when he could barely run laps at lacrosse practice without upchucking or passing out. Oh, how heâd changed.
Without the same distractions that had plagued him through high school, Stiles had managed to get his bachelor's in computer science in three years, then stayed at GWU for another three years to get a master's in digital forensics.
Knowing heâd need to pass the FBI physical fitness test, but with no experience in any of the universityâs D1 sports, Stiles had opted for club lacrosse and Brazilian jiu-jitsu instead, and heâd flirted his way through enough personal training sessions at the gym to learn what he needed to get fit. By the time he was ready to apply to the FBI, Stiles had been in the best shape of his life.
That, along with his impressive grades, his analytical mind, and the tentative affiliation heâd managed to forge with Scottâs dad, had helped Stiles make it through the FBIâs rigorous application and testing process. It had been rough, but heâd succeeded. Any time heâd even remotely considered giving up, Stiles had resorted to the memory of his dad openly weeping when Stiles had gotten his master's, hugging him fiercely, barely able to choke out an Iâm so proud of you.
Heâd managed to mostly avoid Beacon Hills while he was in college and at the academy. It felt good to get away, to start a new life somewhere else, in a place where he wasnât haunted by the ghosts of high school past. Heâd even gotten in touch with Derek, whoâd given him the number of a supernatural-savvy therapist in Rosslyn. Sheâd practically worked miracles for Stiles, mentally preparing him for college and beyond, and had never asked for payment. (A few years later, Derek had admitted what Stiles always suspected - that heâd covered the cost of Stilesâ sessions.)
After being assigned to the San Francisco field office, though, Stiles had run out of excuses for avoiding Beacon Hills. His work with the cyber division kept him busy, as did getting himself set up in his new apartment and getting acquainted with the city, but he could only put off the visit for so long. He made his dad promise not to tell anyone he was coming back. He wanted to ease into it, see people from his past on his own terms.
It wasnât that he was avoiding anyone, except that he was. He didnât particularly want to see Scott or anyone else from the McCall pack, though he knew it would have to happen at some point. Scott would smell Derek on him. Okay, and Isaac. And Jackson and Cora. Then heâd have to admit that after reconnecting with Derek, theyâd become close during Stilesâ early college years. The two of them had been able to persuade the rest of Derekâs ragtag pack to return from around the globe, and theyâd solidified the bond that they shouldâve had in the first place.
The five of them had lived together in DC for as long as Stiles was there, and then when Stiles got his post-Quantico assignment, theyâd made the cross-country trek together. They lived in the same building (which Derek bought, because Derek), but in separate apartments, in Sausalito. After all, though both of them had matured, there was still no way Stiles would be able to share a place with Jackson. He shuddered at the thought, but couldnât help grinning about how far all of them had come.
He was almost back to the parking area when he felt that familiar tingle at the nape of his neck, the one that developed during full moon outings with the rest of the Hale pack, the one that told him he was no longer alone in the woods. Stiles fought the instinctive urge to look back over his shoulder, not wanting to give in to the underlying paranoia that came with being back in the preserve. He wasnât that kid anymore.
He struggled to keep his pace steady, having to remind himself that he wasnât fleeing from anyone, and it wasnât long until he started to hear footfalls behind him. By the time he could see his Jeep - a newer Wrangler heâd bought after arriving on the west coast - up ahead, the person behind him had almost caught up to him.
âStiles?â
Stiles knew that voice. It was one he hadnât heard in quite a few years, but heâd recognize it anywhere. He pulled up, slowing to a jog to let the other man catch up to him as they approached the parking area.
âOh my god, it is you!â
With a nod, Stiles dropped back to a walk and glanced over at a stunned Jordan Parrish.
âYeah, itâs me,â he said as he started to pace the length of the parking area, letting his muscles cool down as he caught his breath. Beside him, Parrish did the same.
âI - I didnât know you were back. The sheriff didnât say anything.â Parrish barely sounded winded.
âI asked him not to tell anyone,â Stiles admitted. He turned and started back toward the end of the trail, not necessarily wanting to elaborate. Thankfully, Parrish was a quick study.
âI get it,â he said softly, still keeping pace with Stiles. âYou want to do it on your own terms. I wonât say anything to anyone.â Stiles heard the unspoken promise in those words. I wonât tell Scott. He turned to find Parrish watching him as they walked, a look of sincerity on his face.
âThanks, Parrish. I appreciate that.â
âItâs Jordan,â he replied with an easy smile. âWeâre off the clock, and weâve definitely known each other long enough to be on a first name basis.â
Stiles relaxed a little and offered a grin of his own. âYeah, we have, havenât we?â He turned again, this time to walk over to the far side of the parking area, where a shiny orange Tacoma sat next to his Wrangler. Stiles snorted as he grabbed a towel from his Jeep. âNice truck. What do they call that shade of orange?â
Jordan let out a laugh, opening the passenger door to pull out a towel of his own, as well as a bottle of water and what looked like a light blanket. âInferno.â
âSeriously?â Stiles huffed as he ran the towel over his face and neck.
âI swear. Drove by the dealership every damn day for four months with that thing calling to me before I finally caved and bought it.â
âIt was meant to be, man.â Stiles reached back into the Jeep for his water bottle. He took a long pull from it before resting it against his cheek. The condensation felt heavenly against his overheated skin.
âIâm going to stretch out a little.â Jordan held up the blanket. âYouâre welcome to join me.â
âYeah, sure,â Stiles agreed. He followed Jordan back across the end of the trail to a small, flat clearing under the trees. Jordan shook out the blanket and spread it out before sitting down near the edge to take off his socks and shoes. Stiles followed suit, and he couldnât help giving Jordan a once-over as they got situated at opposite sides of the blanket.
The years had definitely been kind to Jordan Parrish, who was probably about 34 years old, if Stiles was doing the math right. He looked a little more rugged than he had when Stiles left, with a few more laugh lines around his eyes, a forehead that was a bit higher, and some hints of silver in his morning stubble. Like Stiles, he was wearing mid-length running shorts and a tank top, and it was obvious he still worked out regularly.
Back in high school, Stiles hadnât really thought of Jordan as anything other than his dadâs young deputy-turned-hellhound. And there was the whole thing with the Dread Doctors and the Wild Hunt and Stiles fucking vanishing. By the time it was all over, he wasn't thinking of anything outside of surviving and getting the hell out of Beacon Hills.
College had changed Stiles, though. Heâd explored his bisexuality, heâd become more confident in himself, and heâd come to discover that he had a âtypeâ when it came to men - well-built, reasonably muscular, great smile, someone who could be both beautiful and ruggedly handsome at the same time. And damn, but this older version of Jordan Parrish was hitting all of those buttons, hard.
âWhat?â Jordan asked as he spread his legs and started stretching, giving Stiles a knowing smirk.
And well, Stiles definitely wasnât looking for a relationship in Beacon Hills, not by any means. Still, he wasnât going to shy away from some flirting, especially when it looked like Jordan was more than okay with the attention.
âYou look good.â Stiles held the eye contact and mirrored Jordanâs stretches.
âSo do you. All that time away, and the training you put in...it looks good on you.â He smiled, and Stiles returned it.
As they cycled through various stretches, they fell into an easy conversation about Stilesâ training, both in college and at Quantico.
âI really havenât had to use the defensive tactics outside of training,â Stiles said as they finished up. He reached for his water bottle and took a long drink. âI mean, Iâm cyber, so most of my work is online.â
âYou donât look like you sit at a desk all day.â And okay, flirty Jordan was back. Stiles wiped some water from his upper lip with his thumb, and Jordanâs eyes followed the movement.
âI stay in shape. Still have standard physical evals.â He paused, debating with himself about how much to reveal. âAnd I have to keep up with the rest of the pack.â
To Stilesâ surprise, Jordan just nodded. âDerekâs pack.â
âHowâd you know that?â The sheriff knew, but Stiles doubted heâd shared the information with anyone else.
âDerek and I have a mutual friend.â Jordan shifted so he was sitting closer to Stiles, pulling his knees up. âHe put me in touch with someone who could help me with my control. I - I learned a lot about who I was and what I could do. Sharpened my skills.â
Stiles gaped at him, stunned. Derek hadnât said a word to him about being in touch with anyone from Beacon Hills.
Jordan gave him a sheepish shrug, answering Stilesâ unspoken question. âI didnât want him to tell anyone. I just - it took a long time for me to be okay with what I was. A really long time.â He glanced away, and Stiles got the feeling Jordan still wasnât completely comfortable sharing his skin with a hellhound.
âYouâll get there,â Stiles said softly, nudging Jordanâs bare foot with his own. âIt took me awhile to get over...everything.â The Nogitsune. The Dread Doctors. The Wild Hunt. âDerek helped me find someone, too. I mean, itâs not like you can just Google shrinks who know about the supernatural.â
Jordan huffed out a laugh. âAnd you ended up joining his pack.â When Stiles nodded, Jordan cocked his head at him. âI didnât think he was an alpha anymore.â
âHe wasnât, or at least not the last time you saw him. It happened in South America.â Jordanâs eyes got a little wider, and Stiles hurried to clarify. âHe didnât have to kill another alpha or anything. He wonât tell anyone the whole story, but it had something to do with evolving and with the fact that heâd given up his alpha spark to save Coraâs life. I guess it was kind of like the true alpha thing, butâŠâ He trailed off, trying to find a way to explain without mentioning Scott. âYou know, for someone who actually deserved it.â
Jordan nodded. âHe made a sacrifice worthy of a true alpha.â
âExactly. And once the pack elders helped him work through everything from the past, he actually wanted to be an alpha again. He wanted to take responsibility for the people heâd turned, and for Cora.â
âAnd you.â
âAnd me.â
Thankfully, Jordan didnât ask why Stiles was in Derekâs pack instead of Scottâs. He did ask about the pack, about how Derek and Isaac were doing, and about the two members he didnât know - Cora and Jackson. Stiles told him about their move back to California and how they were settling in before following it up with the Cliffs Notes versions of Coraâs and Jacksonâs stories. Jordan remembered learning about the kanima when he was trying to find out what he was, but he didnât really know anything about Jackson.
âSo it was Lydiaâs love that brought him back to himself?â
âIt was.â Stiles sighed, absently rubbing his thumb over the seam of his shorts. âI mean, compared to Jackson, you and I were just blips on Lydiaâs radar.â
Jordan leaned into Stilesâ space, bumping their shoulders together. âSo, was I ever a blip on your radar back then?â
Stiles considered the question a moment before shaking his head. âGotta be honest, man. There was way too much shit going on in those days for me to even think about exploring the idea that I was bi. I didnât even realize that was a thing until right before you showed up.â
Jordan gave him a long look, one corner of his mouth curled up in a small smile. âBut you have explored it since then?â
âOh, thoroughly,â Stiles said with a laugh. Jordan grinned back at him, and something in Stilesâ stomach clenched. He leaned a little closer, gaze still locked with Jordanâs. âSo, since weâre asking...was I on your radar?â
âNo,â Jordan answered, a little too quickly. At Stilesâ disbelieving look, Jordan shook his head. âOh, come on! You were the underage son of my boss, who, oh by the way, was also the county sheriff.â
âJordan.â Stiles fixed him with a pointed stare.
âWhat?â
âJordan.â
âShit.â Jordan ran a hand through his hair, still a little sweat damp. âOkay, I thought you were, uh, cute. You had - have - the most beautiful eyes. But you werenât even out of high school.â
âNeither was Lydia.â
âAsshole,â Jordan laughed, giving Stiles a playful shove, and yeah, that was definitely a move if Stiles ever saw one. He leaned back into Jordanâs space.
âYou know...I havenât been underage in a really long time.â
Jordanâs eyes raked slowly up and down Stilesâ body, and his gaze darkened. âI can see that.â He hooked two fingers in the front of Stilesâ tank top and reeled him in slowly, giving him plenty of time to pull away. Stiles pushed forward instead, closing the distance. The kiss was amazing, better than he expected, slow and deep and hungry, and he got lost in it. Lost in the feeling of Jordanâs hand slipping around to the back of his neck and the tongue pushing into his mouth.
One of his own hands went to Jordanâs hip and rolled him just far enough so Stiles could lean over him. Jordan groaned into his mouth and hooked a leg over one of Stilesâ to pull them even closer together. And yeah, if the manhandling wasnât enough to get Stiles hard, the nudge of Jordanâs own half-hard cock against his thigh definitely did the trick.
âOh, fuck,â Stiles breathed when they finally came up for air. Jordan was panting a little harder than he should have been, his head down, forehead nearly resting on Stilesâ shoulder. Stiles brought a hand up to cup the back of Jordanâs neck, scratching lightly over the damp hair at his nape. âHey, you okay?â
Jordan nodded and rolled his hips just enough to be convincing. He lifted his head and brought Stiles in for another kiss, shifting to line up their erections. Stiles moaned and thrust against him. He slipped a hand under Jordanâs shirt, only to find his skin feverishly hot. It startled him enough to pull away from Jordanâs mouth, and Jordanâs hips stuttered to a stop under his.
âJordan,â Stiles started, breathing hard, ânot that I want to stop, because I really donât, but I have to askâŠâ He trailed off, letting the unspoken question hang in the heated air between them.
Jordan finally looked up at him, a bit of apprehension mixing with the desire in his green eyes. âI havenât - not since before Afghanistan.â
Stiles gaped at him, even as his fingers glided over Jordanâs stomach in what he hoped was a comforting rhythm. âReally?â
âWhen I got back, I was just adjusting to being out of the Army. Then I got the job and moved here, and you know the rest.â He dropped a kiss at the corner of Stilesâ mouth. âIâm not sure what might happen, and I didnât want to take a chance with someone who doesnât know what I am.â
Stiles pulled him in for another kiss, the hand that was on Jordanâs stomach slipping between them to palm Jordanâs cock. Jordan cried out against Stilesâ lips, his own hand fisted in the back of Stilesâ shirt.
âI know what you are,â Stiles reminded him, still close enough that his lips brushed against Jordanâs. âHowâs your control?â
âPerfect,â Jordan gasped, âin most situations. This...I - Iâll be okay. I wonât hurt you. As long asâŠâ He trailed off, lust-darkened eyes drifting over Stilesâ face.
âAs long as what?â Stiles toyed with the waistband of Jordanâs shorts.
âI, uh, get pretty overheated when I jerk off. How hot do you like it?â
Stiles couldnât help chuckling at that, a low rumble that made Jordanâs eyes widen. âTry me and find out.â
Jordanâs green eyes flashed orange for just a second, and before Stiles realized it was happening, he was flat on his back on the blanket with Jordan straddling his hips. Jordan pushed his own shorts and briefs down below his balls and gave his hard cock a few long pulls, his gaze fixed on Stilesâ face. Stiles whined and, not to be outdone, shoved his shorts and underwear down to mid-thigh. Jordanâs eyes immediately went to Stilesâ erection, and a growl escaped from deep in his chest, just loud enough to remind both of them that he shared his body with a shapeshifter.
âYou should probably take this off.â Stiles tugged at the hem of Jordanâs shirt, and he stripped it off in one smooth movement before leaning down over Stiles, holding himself up with one arm. It should have been awkward, but before Stiles really had a chance to think about it, he was thoroughly distracted by Jordan licking his own palm. âFuck, thatâs hotter than it should be.â
âNot yet,â Jordan breathed, wrapping his hand around both of their dicks, drawing a low moan out of Stiles. âBut it will be soon.â
Stiles could only stare, mouth agape, as Jordan jacked them off. It felt amazing, a little too much friction at first, but god, it had been so long, and Stiles was leaking enough precome to slick the way pretty quickly. He shoved his shirt up to just below his chin to get it out of the way before things got inevitably messy.
Panting above him, Jordan squeezed his eyes shut. As soon as he did, Stiles started feeling the heat building everywhere - from the hand wrapped around them, from Jordanâs body above him, in the air that surrounded them. It was so much better than Stiles could have expected. Instead of making him too hot, the warmth enveloped him and spread through every muscle in his body. It was soothing and arousing at the same time, like nothing Stiles had felt before.
He slid a hand up into Jordanâs hair and tugged him down into a long, lusty kiss. When Jordan pulled away, he opened his eyes, and Stiles saw the beautiful natural green around his blown pupils instead of the orange he almost expected.
âStiles,â Jordan moaned, his body going taut as he came unexpectedly, hot splashes hitting Stilesâ chest and stomach. His head hung down, and the arm that was holding all of his weight started to shake.
âLet me,â Stiles managed to choke out, moving his own hand down to wrap around their dicks so Jordan could hold himself up with both arms. As Stiles started to thrust into his own hand, Jordan leaned down low over Stilesâ chest and ran his tongue, hot and rough, over one of Stilesâ nipples. That was enough to push Stiles over the edge, and he came with a shout, his body going rigid under Jordan.
The warmth that still surrounded them lulled Stiles into a state of post-orgasmic bliss. He sank into it for several minutes, barely noticing when Jordan used his own discarded shirt to clean them off or when he shifted to lay down beside him, pulling Stilesâ shorts back up as far as he could.
âStiles.â Jordanâs voice was a little rough, deeper than usual. Stiles groaned and shook his head. He still wasnât sure what to make of what had just happened, but he knew he wanted to do it again, preferably more than once. âStiles?â
âHmm?â
âWe canât go to sleep here.â
Stiles sighed and opened his eyes to find Jordanâs stupidly beautiful face just inches from his. âI know.â He brushed his lips over Jordanâs and grinned at him. âFuck, that was awesome.â
Jordanâs eyes lit up and he smiled back, open and maybe a little relieved. âIâm glad you thought so.â
Stiles cocked an eyebrow at him. âYou mean you didnât? Not for nothing, buddy, but I think your dick would beg to differ.â
âOh my god, Stiles.â Jordan laughed softly against Stilesâ shoulder. âI - I was a little worried.â The hint of doubt in his voice was enough to bring Stiles the rest of the way around.
âHey, you donât need to be.â He traced Jordanâs jaw with his index finger. âSeriously, that was amazing. And if itâs okay with you, Iâd really like to do it again sometime, hopefully soon. And preferably indoors.â
Jordan swallowed audibly, and there was a shine to his eyes for just a moment before he blinked it away. âYeah. That's more than okay with me.â He pushed himself up, then helped Stiles sit up beside him.
Stiles leaned against him, hand resting on Jordanâs thigh. âFirst, though, I think Iâm gonna need some food, and maybe a nap.â
âMy place?â Jordan asked, giving Stilesâ fingers a squeeze. âI can make us pancakes, or bacon and eggs. Iâm good at breakfast.â
âSounds like a plan to me.â
After a few minutes of just sitting in comfortable silence, Jordan stood and pulled Stiles up with him. They got their things together pretty quickly, and Stiles couldnât help reeling Jordan in for another deep kiss before they parted.
As Stiles followed Jordanâs truck out of the preserve, so many thoughts tumbled around in his head. He was still having a hard time believing just how good it had felt to be with Jordan, how safe he felt in that warmth. He wasnât particularly looking for a long-term relationship, though, and he didnât know if Jordan was either. He tried not to get too caught up in thoughts of the future.
For the time being, he was content with the idea of hooking up with Jordan, being that person who knew what Jordan was and was still willing to be intimate with him, giving him the reassurance heâd need for whatever his future held.
If that future included a relationship with Stiles, then Stiles would be okay with that, and they'd figure out the details when they got there. If not, well...at least theyâd enjoy themselves - and each other - in the meantime.

Summary:Â Right after Stiles graduated high school, Derek got very drunk and sang a karaoke love song to him - and Stiles was so mind-numbingly drunk himself that he didnât understand or remember. Six years later, Stiles finally finds out what really happened that night, and he tracks Derek down to try to make things right. (I swear, this isnât as cracky as it sounds.)Â
Notes: For @poetry-protest-pornographyâ, who gave me a few different choices from the drabble challenge I posted a while back. This is for #25, âI swear Iâm not crazy!â Also on AO3.
It was no surprise to Stiles that his first night hanging out with Scott in the nearly two years since theyâd graduated college was spent eating pizza and wings, watching action movies, and lamenting Stilesâ lack of a love life. It was just like old times. Well, mostly.
Theyâd still managed to keep in touch during college, though not as much as theyâd expected. With Stiles at Stanford and Scott at UC Davis, they hadnât actually been all that far apart - or far away from Beacon Hills - but it had still been hard for them to find the time to get together.
Four years later, with both engineering and biology degrees under his belt, Stiles had gone to work for the sheriffâs department, and then some. After successfully closing a few high-profile cases, the word got out about Beacon Countyâs hotshot forensic science tech, and he started getting called upon to do freelance work for law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
Scott had moved on to veterinary school after getting his bachelorâs, and much of his time outside of classes was spent shadowing local vets, helping out at the Sacramento Zoo, networking with other packs, and wedding planning with Kira.
âItâs hard to believe you two are finally getting married,â Stiles said as he leaned back on the sofa, hands resting on his full stomach. âI mean, itâs not, but it is.â
âYeah.â Scott, sprawled out on the floor, stared at the ceiling. âIt sucked that her parents moved the family back to New York when she got into a school there - that was a loooong four years. But we made it, she moved back, and we still had what we did before she left. It was nice to have someone to come back to, you know?â
Stiles frowned, knowing Scott couldnât see it. He did know. Stiles himself didnât have anyone to come back to, and it made his chest ache to think about it. Heâd done some casual dating in college, but he hadnât been in any serious relationships. And while Scott finally got to be with the one for whom heâd been waiting, Stiles had no such luck. He probably should have moved on at some point and stopped pining for Derek once and for all, but he could never quite bring himself to do so.
âDude, stop,â Scott said, sitting up and fixing Stiles with a critical look. âYour heartâs doing that weird thing it always does when you think about Derek.â
âFuck off.â Stiles flipped him off for good measure, muttering stupid werewolves under his breath, though there was no real heat behind the words or the gesture.
âHey, itâs not my fault you didnât take the chance when you had it.â
âRight,â Stiles said with a smirk, âlike I ever had a snowballâs chance with Derek.â
âStiles, buddy, I seriously thought you wouldâve outgrown the insecurity thing by now.â
âI have,â Stiles insisted. âI have a job I like, and Iâm damn good at it. I make a decent living, I have a nice apartment and good friends and two degrees, and I like to think Iâm kind of a catch, okay? But I never had a chance with Derek, so letâs not even go there. Thereâs not enough Ben & Jerryâs in this town to get me through that.â
Scott tilted his head, and it was only the genuine look of confusion on his face that kept Stiles from making a puppy joke. âYou did, though. Why do you think he came back with Cora that last time, right after we graduated high school?â
âWell, it sure as hell wasnât to get together with me.â Stiles gave him the most exaggerated eye roll he could manage.
âHe tried, but you pretty much blew him off. Remember, he got drunk off his ass and sang that song to you, and you just kind of laughed about it? If the rest of us hadnât been so drunk, it wouldâve been painful to watch.â
25, 36, 38, 64 take your pick for the drabble thing!
Should I be this excited to finally receive a prompt on here? Thank you!! I picked 64 (âHere, take my blanket.â) for now, but I may do the other ones at some point as well.
Anyway, here it is!
Better Than Fireworks
2k/G/Sterek/fluff (Also on AO3.)
âWow,â Stiles breathed, âI never realized how peaceful it is outhere at night.â
Derek hummed in agreement as he followed the bobbing beam ofStilesâ flashlight, but said nothing. It was one of his favorite things aboutthe property, really. Heâd fallen in love with the large mountain parcel fromthe first time heâd seen it, with its fixer-upper house set way back at the endof a long driveway, hidden from the rest of the world. In the time that heâdowned it, Derek had made extensive repairs and upgrades to both the house andyard, but heâd left the surrounding forest largely untouched. It reminded himof home, but without the feelings of loss and pain and failure that had alwayshaunted him in Beacon Hills.
It had taken time, a lot of time, andeven some therapy, for Derek to truly move on enough to return to California. He hadnât gone back to Beacon Hills, finding himself drawn instead to theforests hours north of his childhood home. It was close enough for his friendsto visit, but far enough away that he never felt the pull to go back to theformer Hale pack lands.
âHey, Derek, you okay?â Stiles nudged him in the side with anelbow, bringing Derek out of his thoughts.
Years ago, when theyâd first met, Derek might have shot back thatit would be even more peaceful if Stiles stopped talking, but things hadchanged since then. Derek had changed since then.
âYeah, Iâm good,â he said instead, letting himself appreciate thegenuine concern in both Stilesâ tone and his scent. Derek wasnât the only onewhoâd changed. Stiles had been through so many things since the two of them hadfirst met, and yet heâd somehow managed to come out stronger. Heâd justgraduated from college, and after spending part of the summer at home with hisdad and friends/pack, heâd decided to take Derek up on his offer of a place toget away from everything (namely, Beacon Hills itself) for a while.
Stiles had been staying with Derek for a little over a month, andthough there was something well beyond friendship happening between them - hadbeen for years, really - they were taking things fairly slowly.
âSo, you still wonât tell me why weâre going to the overlook?âStiles threaded the fingers of his free hand through Derekâs, squeezing gently.
âYouâll see.â Derek smiled in the dark, his own fingerstightening. He let his eyes glow briefly, the range of his own night visiongiving him a better view than the flashlight. He could just barely make out thesmall clearing that Stiles had dubbed âthe overlook.â It extended outwardbefore dropping off into the ravine that separated Derekâs property from theone on the other side, and the unobstructed view of the sky was stunning, dayand night.
They walked in silence until they reached the clearing. Derekreluctantly let go of Stilesâ hand before slipping the pack from his back andpulling out the contents. He unrolled the camping pad and spread it out on theground, then shook out a thin quilt and laid it on top, all while trying tokeep from being blinded by Stilesâ flashlight.
âDude, seriously?â Stiles sounded completely confused. âWeâre justgoing to chill out here? What if we get attacked by a skunk, or a porcupine, orsomething?â
âWeâll be fine,â Derek replied as he handed Stiles a blanket.âWolves are pretty high up on the food chain.â He pulled his own blanket out ofthe pack before sitting down on one side of the pad and motioning for Stiles totake the spot beside him.
âOkay, so whatâd you do, pee around the whole property to markyour territory or something?â Stiles flopped down beside Derek and pressed intohis side, tucking the flashlight between them so that they could see each otherin the darkness.
âThey can just tell. Iâve run the borders fully shifted enoughtimes that they can smell my wolf.â He didnât dare tell Stiles that he had, infact, pissed at the edges of the clearing more times than he cared to count, both shifted and not - not to mark his territory, but simply because he had togo. Heâd never hear the end of it.
âLikely story,â Stiles muttered, but he dropped the subject infavor of continuing his interrogation. âSo, are there fireworks in town orsomething?â
âNo, no fireworks. Iâm hoping for something even better.â
âAre we just going to sit here and look at the stars?â
âYou could say that,â Derek murmured, hoping his plan for thenight wouldnât be a complete bust. His wolf was definitely in sync with the moon, but with the stars? Not so much. Still, it felt right, and something deepinside of Derek reminded him that, no matter what the night sky had in storefor them, this was time that he and Stiles got to share, just the two of them.
Stiles seemed to be satisfied enough with Derekâs vague answer. Hewrapped his blanket around his shoulders and settled back in, plasteringhimself against Derekâs side. They sat in silence as minutes passed, and it wason the tip of Derekâs tongue to tell Stiles what he should be looking for, butthen he felt Stiles shiver against him. Even in the middle of August, it couldget a little chilly at night in the mountains, something Derek hadnât reallyconsidered before they left the house. He ran warm enough that it rarely botheredhim, but Stiles was a whole different being, in more ways than one.
âHere, take my blanket,â he said into the silence, shaking out hisown folded blanket and draping it around Stilesâ shoulders. He let his armlinger along Stilesâ back, and Stiles leaned into him with a contented sigh.Taking that as a sign, Derek gave Stilesâ bicep a squeeze as he pulled theyounger man in even closer. âBetter?â
âMuch.â Stiles huffed out a soft laugh. âYouâre not very subtle, you know. Bringing me out to look at the stars, giving me your blanket so youhave an excuse to put your arm around me. Iâm on to you, Sweetwolf.â
Derek smirked at the nickname. âI didnât think subtle was yourthing.â
âIâm not complaining.â Stiles turned a little and wrapped an armaround Derekâs back. He went still for a moment, and Derek turned his head intoStilesâ hair, breathing in the scent of him as he waited him out. âI - I reallylike it here, you know. I mean, look at me. Iâm sitting outside in the pitchdark in the middle of the woods just outside of Nowheresville, and normally,Iâd be really creeped out, right? You know, after everythingâŠâ He trailedoff, inhaling deeply through his nose. âBut I feel safe here. With you. Like, not just here here, but your place in general.â
The words overwhelmed Derek, not only because there was no lie inthem, but because Stiles had just put into words what Derek himself had beenfeeling since moving to the property, and especially since Stiles had arrived. He felt calm, safe in a way he hadnât for years, and he was finally able to lethis guard down. The nightmares that had plagued him for years had been reducedto the occasional bad dream, and when he awakened from one, he no longer had toresort to counting his fingers - a trick heâd learned from Stiles so long ago.He was able to ground himself in the call of the mockingbird outside hiswindow, or the sound of the breeze through the treetops, or more recently, thesteady beat of Stilesâ heart. The younger man had recently taken to slippinginto Derekâs bed late at night, which helped both of them immensely, thoughDerek still had a hard time admitting to himself that he might enjoy thecuddling even more than Stiles did.
âOooo-kay,â Stiles said, his pulse ticking up just a bit. âAnd Imade thing awkward. Way to go, Stiles.â
âNo,â Derek blurted, knowing that feeling all too well. âYoudidnât. I just - I was thinking the same thing. That I feel safe here.â He tooka deep breath and forced out the rest of the thought. âEspecially since you gothere.â
âReally?â
âReally.â Derek pulled back just far enough to look into Stilesâeyes in the dim light. âI found this place, and it helped meâŠfind myself, Iguess.â It sounded corny, and Derek cringed inside, but Stiles just looked athim with a deep understanding. He swallowed, his voice dropping to a nearwhisper. âThen you showed up, and everything felt right for once in my life.âStiles gaped at him, and Derek felt himself blush. âNow whoâs making thingsawkward.â
Stiles shook his head. âI wouldnât say that, exactly.â BeforeDerek could put together what Stiles meant, the younger manâs lips were on his.It was a soft kiss, not unlike others theyâd shared in recent days, butsomething about it felt even more perfect. When they finally parted, Stilesnuzzled into Derekâs neck, and it warmed something deep inside of Derek. âSo,did you really bring me out here to woo me? Because itâs working.â
Derek breathed a laugh into Stilesâ hair, then gazed back up atthe sky. Sure enough, within a minute, he saw a flash of light streak acrossthe heavens. âThatâs only part of the reason,â he finally answered. âLook up.â
âHuh?â Stiles stirred and pushed himself up far enough to tilt hishead back, looking up at the starry sky above them. âOkay, what am I - whoa!âHe jumped, his arm going tight around Derek. âHoly shit, did you seethat?â
âI did.â Derek leaned in to press a kiss to Stilesâ temple beforeturning his attention back to the sky. Stiles was now watching intently, sitting as still as Derek had ever seen him, and he was rewarded for his efforta few minutes later.
âThereâs another one. Are you freaking kiddingme?â He turned wide eyes on Derek, who couldnât help grinning at him.
âPerseid meteor shower,â he said simply. âI figured this would bea good vantage point.â
Stiles gave him a soft smile. âYeah, this is the best.â He leanedback into Derekâs side, a little shiver running through him. The blankets hadpooled around Stilesâ waist during their impromptu makeout session, and Derekreached down to pull them back up, wrapping them around their shoulders withStilesâ help. Stiles curled into Derekâs warmth, and Derek held him as they satand watched the sky, making soft noises of awe every time they saw anothermeteor.
As Stiles snuggled into him, it hit Derek that, in that moment, there was nowhere heâd rather be, and no one with whom heâd rather be sharinghis time.
He was in love with Stiles.
Heâd probably known for a long time, but the realization didnâtaffect him the same way it would have years ago. Instead of being caught offguard by it or scared of what might happen to Stiles, the understanding that hewas in love with the younger man simply settled Derek even more.
A small smile playing at the corners of his mouth, Derek tuckedhis face into Stilesâ neck and inhaled deeply. Stiles hummed and tilted his headto give Derek better access. Derekâs lips traced a path up to a spot on Stilesâjaw, just in front of his ear.
âSo,â he whispered, âbetter than fireworks?â
Stiles laughed softly, his fingers tickling Derekâs side throughhis shirt. âWell, I love fireworks, butâŠnot gonna lie, this is totally betterthan fireworks.â
And as they sat there, cuddling under blankets as the occasionalmeteor flared across the sky above them, both of them at peace, Derek couldonly agree.

The only pattern I can really see is that I like to mention one or both characters from the main pairing in the first line. Also, I apparently like long opening lines.
