Where ever my journey takes me..one time I decided to take a risk and create mosaic on a surfboard in none other than Surf City USA. My goal was to create an heirloom..high quality…one of a kind mosaic on this unique substrate. I ended up creating 7..the first winning a “Peoples Choice” award and another chosen to travel to Muscat, Oman to be in a two year exhibition with the US Art in Embassies program. It also lead to my creating my instructional video through “Mosaic Arts Online” where I teach my process. Not bad for a one time crazy, spur of the moment idea to slap glass on a surfboard. Okay so back to work on this surfboard. Working on drawing out the design today. I’ve had this in my studio for a few days now just staring at it and cutting out a few more lotus flowers to figure out my placement. Also thinking about what glass I will use and movement (andamento) in this piece. There is a lot to consider. A lot that will work until you consider other things going on within the piece that will contradict an original idea. So I guess a lot of compromise and meeting in the middle so all parts work. Wish people understood just how much thought goes into mosaic art. What looks simple is actually very complex and very thought out. I can’t wait to start cutting glass to be honest. The design part for me is maybe the most tedious and hard to figure out. To quote Sonia King..”Mosaic is hard. I love traveling. Love seeing places and the things in these places I have never seen before or don’t see on a regular. I take many photos and most often these end up being inspiration for my work. One thing I wish I would of done more of before leaving WI is to explore my local area more. The things you find in your own backyard. Highly recommend.
