We got to Anne&Max around 1.30 pm, and sat down at the table where Affy had been pretending to study for a few hours already [Baa, are we in trouble now for telling?]. Although the cafe was packed (almost every table was occupied) and everyone was talking quite loudly, it really didn’t bother us. Because of the way the chairs and tables are positioned, we got a nice and private feeling in our little corner. As far as study friendliness goes, Anne&Max is mostly suited for reading a book or working on a laptop. The tables by the window (where we were seated) are rather small and low, and the place is a bit too noisy for serious studying. A huge plus goes to Anne&Max for the rocking chairs (which Maa sat in and Baa was very jealous of, muaaahaha). Every cafe should have those!

After a short time, a waitress came over to take our order. Affy and Baa chose the Chai Latte (€ 2,75), while Maa picked the hot chocolate (€ 3,00) with whipped cream (€ 0,50, although this price is not on the menu). The tea was amazing: tasty, very foamy and was not too spicy. Unfortunately, the hot chocolate wasn’t very special: according to Maa, it tasted like regular chocolate milk heated in the microwave. The portion was not very big, either, despite the fact that it was a ‘doppio’ (which means 'double', therefore bigger). This made her wonder what a regular-sized cup of hot chocolate looks like...

Having finished our drinks and having talked a lot, we decided it was time to order our lunch. Our tummies were rumbling like roaring dinosaurs. Maa and Baa both chose the Panino mozzarella (Mozzarella cheese, tomato, pine nuts and green pesto) of € 5,50. I wasn’t easy to make a choice, though: Anne&Max offers a wide variety of delicious sandwiches, soups and pies. Many products have original names and come with a short description. We knew straight away that we had to come back here some time to taste more of these delicious baked goods, such as the cheesecake that would make even the staunchest health freak's mouth water. The sandwiches were really good: perfectly crusty and still warm, but not so hard that it left splinters in our gums (like we experienced in Barrera). Baa did think the sandwich was quite salty (it made her thirsty), but Maa and guest sheep Affy told her that pesto is supposed to be that salty and that it was perfectly normal.

Although Anne&Max is definitely not cheap, the prices are not that high when you realize that all their products are fresh and mostly organic. A nice bonus is that quite a few things can be ordered for 2 or more people: you can get a lunch for two, or enjoy a high tea together with a group. Because they’ve only just opened their store, they are still working on the last few things (such as a toilet sign, we totally got lost). But it already looks really cozy and welcoming. They also sell mugs and thermos jugs, and you can also get your drinks to go (this is definitely a plus for hasty students who don’t have time to cycle all the way to the Starbucks). The toilets were carefully kept. And although Baa almost locked herself up in the bathroom because the door lock stuck, the wicked waterfall taps made up for that.

To conclude, Anne&Max is a bit of a hipster cafe, but mostly just a very nice place to sit, eat and chatter for hours. It’s also a good place to read a book and work behind your laptop. Food and drinks aren’t cheap, but also not extremely expensive (and most importantly: really good!). The atmosphere is pleasant and the waiters and waitresses are nice. So go check it out for yourself!

We kwamen rond half twee binnen en schoven aan bij Affy. Hoewel er vrij veel mensen binnen waren (bijna alle tafeltjes waren wel bezet) en er vrij luid gepraat werd, hadden we er geen last van. Door de indeling van stoelen, tafels, en krukjes heb je het gevoel dat je lekker afgezonderd zit. Qua studievriendelijkheid is Anne&Max vooral geschikt om een boek te lezen of achter een laptop te zitten. De tafeltjes (in elk geval in het hoekje waar wij zaten) zijn wat te klein en te laag om handig aan te kunnen werken. Natuurlijk is het er tijdens de lunch ook iets te druk om ongestoord te kunnen studeren. Groot pluspunt is dat er schommelstoelen aanwezig zijn. Dit zou elk café moeten hebben!

Al snel kwam er iemand langs om onze bestelling op te nemen. Affy en Blaat kozen de Chai Latte (€ 2,75), terwijl Mekker ging voor de warme chocolademelk (groot, € 3,-) met slagroom (€ 0,50, prijs staat overigens niet op de menukaart). Wederom was de thee heerlijk, met lekker veel melkschuim en niet té pittig, en de chocolademelk helaas niet bijzonder. Volgens Mekker smaakte het naar chocomel uit de magnetron en was de portie ook niet zo groot, ondanks het feit dat het een doppio was (dat is dus groter...).

Nadat het drinken naar binnen was gewerkt en er het nodige afgekletst was, bestelden we onze lunch. Mekker en Blaat gingen allebei voor de Panino mozzarella (Mozzarella, tomaat, pijnboompitten en groene pesto) à € 5,50. Die keuze was niet gemakkelijk: Anne&Max heeft een overheerlijk aanbod, zowel zoet als hartig. Veel producten hebben originele namen en zijn voorzien van een korte beschrijving. We wisten dus al meteen dat we hier nog eens terug wilden komen om meer te proeven, bijvoorbeeld de cheesecake waar zelfs Sonja Bakker spontaan van begint te watertanden. De broodjes waren erg lekker: knapperig gebakken en nog warm, maar niet zó hard dat je de splinters in je tandvlees hebt staan. Blaat vond het wel wat zout (ze kreeg er dorst van) maar volgens Mekker en gastschaap Affy kwam dat door de pesto en was dat hartstikke normaal.

Hoewel Anne&Max niet goedkoop is, zijn de prijzen zeker niet te hoog als je nagaat dat alle producten vers en zoveel mogelijk biologisch zijn. Een leuk extraatje is ook dat veel dingen ook voor twee of meer personen te bestellen zijn: zo kun je er een lunch voor twee personen krijgen, of een high tea om te delen.

Omdat ze nog maar net in Leiden zitten, worden de finishing touches qua inrichting nu nog gemaakt, maar het ziet er al heel gezellig en verwelkomend uit. Bij de kassa worden mokken en thermoskannen verkocht, en je kunt je drinken ook to go krijgen (handig voor gehaaste studenten die geen tijd hebben om naar het station te fietsen om een Starbucks te bezoeken...). De toiletten waren netjes, en hoewel Blaat zichzelf bijna in de wc opsloot door een klemmend slot, maakten de gave waterval-kranen alles weer goed.

Over het geheel genomen is Anne&Max een beetje een hipstercafé, maar vooral een heel erg leuke gelegenheid om lekker te zitten, wat te eten, en eindeloos te kletsen. Een boekje lezen of achter de laptop werken kan er ook goed. Eten en drinken is er niet bijzonder goedkoop, maar ook zeker niet te duur (en bovendien erg lekker!). De sfeer is goed en het personeel is aardig. Een aanrader!
