Some illustrations I did for my Gender and Sex in Literature midterm assignment. The quotes are from the novella âSphinxâ by Anne GarrĂŠta. I havenât been drawing a lot lately, so having an excuse made me happy.Â
It would have been better had you kept a journal. But you do not possess the talent of your peers. From day to day, you would have had nothing to report: nothing ever happens to you except in remembering. You only grasp the moment in distant memory, once oblivion has given things, being, events, the density that they never have in the broad evanescence of daylight.
Not One Day by Anne GarrĂŠta, trans. Emma Ramadan
Described as a "genderless love story", Sphinx, by Anne Garreta, is this week's #fictionfriday pick. In a story that delves into the nightclubs and cabarets of after-hours Paris and explores the relationship between a nameless narrator and A***, a dancer from America, Sphinx has become a modern classic of experimental, feminist, and LGBT/queer literature. Â It was nominated for the PEN Translation Prize.

Iâm reading Sphinx right now, and Tumblr needs to pay more attention to this book. I know it was originally written in the eighties, but yâall. Thereâs no gendered language used for either the narrator or the love interest. Itâs glorious. Also it actually has a plot. Also the relationship is interracial and you can interpret everything so many ways.

âA tour de force of experimental queer feminist writingâ and âan erotic, genderless love story.â Two books from novelist Anne Garreta, newly translated from the French by Emma Ramadan and published by Deep Vellum Publishing, read Not One Day and Sphinx.
And so began what seemed to me a new life, but what seemed to all those who knew me the beginning of a resigned and aimless wandering.
Anne GarrĂŠta, Sphinx
âFor life is too short to resign ourselves to reading poorly written books and sleeping with women we donât love.â
(From âNot One Dayâ by Anne GarrĂŠta)
