When a teenaged girl disappears from an insular small town, all of the community’s most devastating secrets come to light in this stunningly
When seventeen-year-old Abigail goes missing, her best friend Emma sets out to discover the truth about what happened. The police initially believe Abi ran away, but Emma doesn’t believe that her friend would leave without her, and when officers find disturbing evidence in the nearby woods, the festering secrets and longstanding resentment of Abigail’s family begins to surface with devastating consequences.
Among those secrets: Abi’s older brother Noah’s passionate, dangerous love for the handsome Rat, a recently arrived Romanian immigrant who has recently made his home in the trailer park in town; her younger brother Jude’s feeling that he knows information he should tell the police, if only he could put it into words; Abi’s father’s mercurial, unpredictable rages and her mother’s silence.
But Abi had secrets, too, and the closer Emma grows to unraveling the past, the farther she feels from her friend. And in a tinder box of small-town rage, and all it will take is just one spark—the truth of what really happened that night—to change their community forever.
Tall Bones by Anna Bailey
Emma is an awkward 18 year old from Whistling Ridge, a tiny town full of Dirty little secrets. Emma's BFF Abigail goes missing, because her family is the "trashy weird" family, police and locals think she has just run away. Emma does not believe that and will not sit back and twiddle her thumbs, while Abi may be out there hurt.
This town though, full of "Good Christian People" which in this case means racist, homophobic douchebags. The local preacher is all fire and brimstone, working the towns people into religious frenzy, using it for hate. However, some of the kids do not take after their parents and are not hateful.
While we look for Abi, we meet amazingly strong characters through it. Abi's brother, her mother is just 2 of them. They fight to be seen for who they are, they fight to accept themselves and you cheer them on all the way. Abi may be missing but a whole lot of secrets get burst open in the aftermath.
Really is worth a read.
Where the Truth Lies (Tall Bones) by Anna Bailey
I absolutely adored this book and the characters in it. This book was a rollercoaster of emotions and was such a well written story. I had to make playlists for Noah and Rat. Just know that they are absolutely devastating but oh so them. What a powerful book.
„Human beings weren‘t made to carry this much absence inside them, she thinks. There is no way to reason it out, how so much nothing can be so heavy“
