âitâs midnight, um. we should get to sleep.â
estelle doesnât hear him the first time. the second time, she finally looks up from the old sketchbook splayed out on her lap. her gaze shifts from hurley to the lit-up screen of his phone on his nightstand, all while her fingers still gently trail over a drawing a younger version of hurley had made, like the indentations on the paper would tell her a story of who he was before they met.Â
âright.â her shoulders droop, but she hands him his sketchbook back, uncrossing her legs and letting them dangle over the side of his bed. their gazes linger longer than usual lately, hanging in the midst of a gentle silence theyâve gotten to know like a dear friend. blue hues shift, then, to the subtle pink that colors his cheeks and probably mirror her own, and then the subtle curl at the corner of his lips. sheâs already halfway in before sheâs aware sheâs leaning, and itâs only when he reciprocates that she falls back into step with reality. the softness of it doesnât diminish the way her chest tightens, how her breath stutters in her lungs for a moment. and itâs usually for a moment. but the kiss lingers, and she leans further into it, and sheâs pressing her hands into her lap to keep them from framing his face and tugging him closer. to keep herself from wanting to stay so badly.Â
they eventually have to come up for air. they hover near each other, catching their breaths quietly. if hurley wants to say something, estelle beats him to the punch, breathing out a âgoodnightâ before she slips out of his room, all the while swallowing her heart back into her chest.

âso, maybe iâve got a couple of breadsticks with your name on âemâ, yâknow, since their breadstick throne was probably waaaaay molded over by now. it was time to start over and fresh -- no stale bread allowed.Â
âi donât-- iâm not--â estelleâs brows are furrowed, lips tugged down into focus. hurley stares at her from the side, lips pursed, gaze switching between her frown and the blank canvas in front of her.
âwhat?â
âi donât know where to start.â she looks at the canvas, then at the bowl of fruit hurley had arranged for her sitting atop their little dining table. she shifts in her chair, sighs. âi mean, not the background or the fruit because-- well, iâd need the bowl first. so i should... paint the bowl. but do i start with the bottom or the top, or...â a brief moment of silence passes before she turns to him, frown slowly morphing into a pout. âam i overthinking this?â
heâs resting his face against his hand, his palm hiding his amused half-smile. but heâs sweet and gentle, and he thinks before responding, âuh, a little bit. you just need to... um, here.â he brings his chair, one of the chairs from the dining table, beside hers. and his movements, ever hesitant-- like heâs still not sure how to act around her-- lead him closer as he places one hand over one of hers, the one holding the brush, and guides it up to the canvas, swiping a streak of paint across the center. his eyes are laser-focused on the canvas, just like estelleâs, so neither sees the pink warmth creeping onto their cheeks.
âstart there, and just... donât overthink it. just, um, go with what feels right.â
estelle nods resolutely, though his hand in still enveloping hers, fingers half-threaded, and he doesnât pull it back, and she doesnât pull away, and she wonders when theyâll be able to touch and her mind wonât just become a nervous, giddy, empty void. it still feels foreign-- this thing theyâre becoming, blooming into. but itâs comforting, in a way, like he always has been.
so, she starts painting, and his hand joins her in her careful and calculated movements across the canvas. at one point, the heat in her face subsides as concentration takes over, and his hold on her hands softens but follows her nonetheless-- a captive audience. every now and then, she asks something and he guides her hand, helping her shade or showing how to depict the light bouncing off the fruit. after a while, she feels the soft weight of his head as he props his chin on her shoulder, his breaths calm and even.
there is a calmness in this storm of butterflies. she lets her head tip to the side, brushing against his, as her lips curl into a smile, regarding the half-done painting. a soft chuckle filters into her voice. âyou know what?â she mumbles, âi think iâve found my calling.â he laughs. itâs just as warm as the touch of his hand, and she falls deeper.
i found this in my drafts and decided to finish it | @anklebitxrs
the one where you donât know your soulmate until you touch them.
some people say itâs fleeting. not in a romantic âit-only-happens-onceâ sense, but in a anxiety-inducing âit-happens-once-and-then-you-never-see-each-other-again-and-you-spend-your-whole-life-looking-for-themâ sense. estelle has never been able to decide whether the idea frightened or delighted her. maybe a bit of both. the thought of coming upon her soulmate and, just with a touch, knowing it was them already terrified her; which was ODD, considering it would alleviate her romantic life (if her soulmate was even ROMANTICâ that isnât always the case), but⌠she doesnât know if she WANTS to know them, because there is a RISK in that. being tied by that invisible thread the universe has woven into people does not equate to assurance that the thread wouldnât break, wouldnât sever, wouldnât fall off before they ever crossed paths.
but surely, if the time ever came for estelle, it would be nothing close to FLEETING. this is what she tells herself as she hugs her coat closer to her, weaving through the busy sidewalk on her way back to the hotel sheâs staying at for the night. she decided to take a walk, get a sense for the atmosphere of her new home, but the wind is especially biting today, so she ends her walk prematurely. which means she has to deal with lunch time, when the people traffic is ESPECIALLY heavy. she curls into herself a bit, keeping her gaze on the ground if only to keep herself from tripping.
and then it happens.Â
she doesnât know how to describe it. itâs sudden, so sudden she almost misses it. first, itâs something colliding with her shoulder, sending her stumbling to the side before she rights herself. at the same time, it feels as if a current of cool air found a way into her coat and onto her bare skin. the chill runs up her spine, along her shoulders and arms and up her neck. she shakes her head, her teeth shattering momentarily.
the shock of it all makes her keep walking forward for one, two, three seconds. her mind tells her keep going, keep going, it was just a breeze. but she knows it wasnât. she turns around. she sees people walking towards and away from her, heads bowed, uninterested. they bump against her, pushing her back, and the anxiety kicks in. she starts fighting the flow of people, swerving through them, pursing her lips apologetically, standing on the tips of her toes and looking for⌠what?Â
she doesnât see anything worth chasing after, canât see anyone with eyes alight in uncertain desperation like hers. she keeps looking anyway for ten minutes, until her shoulders are sore from being bumped into so much and the wind has numbed her nose and cheeks. she doesnât know what to look for, and she eventually turns back around and returns to the hotel. that night, her heart beats out of place, her brain races and stills and makes her dizzy. the residue of the touch lingers, a whispered reminder, an incomplete memory. then itâs gone.
it is fleeting.
she doesnât sleep much.
_____
his name is hurley. heâs in his early twentyâs, like her. he had blue hair in the picture of him she saw, but he might have changed it since then. he seems pleasant, and thatâs all she can ask for at this point in this new chapter in her life.
she takes as many boxes as she can from the back of her rental car until she can barely see over the top of them. her heart beats out of place the longer she waits in the elevator, the longer she spends walking down the hall, the longer she waits in frotn of her new home after barely managing to knock on the door. it creaks open, and thereâs a momentary pause before a voice says, âhey, uhâ do youâ uh, let me help you.â
the weight straining on her arms begins to lessen as the personâ hurley, she guessesâ grabs the bottom of the small tower of boxes, and their hands brush. they let go at the same time when a chill runs through both of them, and the boxes clatter to the floor.
âshit, um, iââ he stutters, his arms half-stretched out, staring at her with mouth slightly agape. she stares at him back and he quickly looks away. a moment stretches, feels like a lot more than fleeting, stuffs the hallway with silence. then impulse takes over, and she grabs his arm. he looks back up, and their breaths collectively catch in their throats.
the feeling is there, constant, like a hum. the moment feels like it lasts forever. and he breaks it, because heâs the only who can right now.
he says, half-relieved, half-anxious, half something she canât quite place, âi was looking for you.â

not accepting | @anklebitxrs
a sparse melody echoes off the apartment walls and, tucked into a corner of her living room, jackie hunches over her piano, hugging a knee to her chest while her other leg dangles off the bench. her fingers drift over the keys, sometimes sliding into familiar patterns that she hums to knowingly, other times bouncing off of foreign sounds that she lingers on, most of the times just going back and forth between two notes again and again and again and again--
âah!â arms wrap around her middle and pick her up from the piano (almost knocking it over in the process, mind you). she hears and feels another melody she has recently gotten reacquainted with behind her, and a smile betrays her. she wrestles halfheartedly against his grasp and he puts her down, but his hold still lingers around her frame, his chin finding a resting on the crown of her head.
âtodayâs your break day,â he mumbles into her hair, turning both of them away from the piano. out of sight, out of mind, is probably his thought process, âyou have a writing session tomorrow, right?â
âyeah, but i had something just then, if you just let me finish it--â
âdid you, really?â his hold on her loosens, his voice wavers on apologetic and suspicious.
âyep.â she had absolutely nothing.
and then he asks her to show him, and she does, in essence. she sits at the bench with him pressed to her side, and she plays one key. and then the other. and then she goes back to the first key. and back to the other one, and back to the first. she stops. she looks at him. he looks back. she grins. he nods his head in acceptance. itâs really not that bad of a melody if you think about it--
and sheâs back up again, wriggling in his arms, and their joint laughter is enough to make her forget about the damn piano altogether. theyâre still rebuilding what they had before, making something new out of the crumbled pieces; itâs been a while since theyâve touched each other without hesitating, without having to ask just to grab the otherâs hand. it feels strange, in a good way. in a great way. even when she tugs too hard and they tumble down, even when he wheezes because she lands right on top of him, even when she asks him if heâs okay through giggles. it feels like another puzzle piece.
âlooks like you won.â he says after regaining his breath, and there is something in those words that makes her stomach knot in delight. at some moment, his hand finds hers and her lips meet his, and she mumbles, âi know.â

usually, the sound of the treats bouncing against the bowl on the kitchenette floor brings a small white cat sprinting (or sometimes lazily strolling, depending on the mood) towards the food. that said, when estelle shakes the bag of treats into the bowl, there is no sign of luna; no pitter patter of her tiny claws against the floor. itâs not normal, and she immediately becomes suspicious. she straightens and looks, padding lightly across the kitchen, along the living room, in the bathroom.Â
âluna.â she whispers as she makes her way around the apartment. she tends to be quiet when hurleyâs home. ever since the museum incident, anyway. theyâve barely talked since then, except for tiny, awkward little interactions every now and then. she just feels odd... the air in the apartment feels weird, wrong, stuffy since that night. either way, her search for luna ends up with her in front of hurleyâs door. she stands there for about five minutes, pursing her lips and furrowing her brows until she gathers the courage to knock on the door. âhey, hurley...â she calls out. âis, um, is luna in there with you?â
when estelle steps into the exhibition hall, itâs all suits and gowns, wine glasses and idle chatter. her anxiety spikes for a moment, makes her shoulders hunch forward and her hands smooth over the skirt of her dress before she forces her muscles to relax and her back to straighten. itâs only when she remembers who sheâs here for (and when she fins a glass of wine of her own) that the excitement clouds over her nerves.
is this what it feels like to step into someone elseâs dream? it must be, estelle thinks as she makes her way past art piece after art piece. it makes her feel giddy, pulling at the edges of her lips and making butterflies settle in her stomach; hurley deserves this. sheâs pressing down on her lips to try and hold back the grin that threatens to break through when her eyes catch him-- blue suit against faded blue hair, back to her as he stares at a painting belonging to the runner-up. the scene in front of her makes her skin feel warm, the buzzing in her stomach turn to a whirlwind. she stands there for a minute or two, looking at him and thinking of what to say. after another sip of wine, she quietly steps up beside him, a shy smile finding its way to her lips. âhi, do you know where i can find hurley masonâs section?â
