Friday morning with Kevin. Warmed up with some roll outs and then worked on some competition strategy for starting a match. The idea is to establish some grips and to be able to find openings on your opponent. We drilled circling to the side of an aggressive opponent, establishing a strong double collar grip to control, breaking grips, and led into an ankle pick takedown:
From standing with some grips on opponent, slide your left hand midway up opp’s left collar (enough to make them wary, but not enough to make them step out). They’ll respond by going two-on-one to break your grip.
Take a small penetration step with your right (in between their legs), bring your right hand behind opp’s left ankle, and punch with your left as you stand up to get the ankle pick.
You can continue forward to take opponent down if they’re still standing. To take down a well-balanced opponent, lift your right hand and drag down the lapel in a counter-clockwise circle.
Then we did some live rolling starting from guard. Got to work with partners of every level and had mixed success. I did get my professor to tap to a triangle, which is a great feeling, even though I’m sure he was giving me chances to try things. I set it up with the Kevin/pendulum sweep and when he posted his arm to stop it, I wrapped up the triangle. Worked out of several escape attempts and got the tap. I was also able to work a kimura trap escape from mount against a blue belt, but ended up losing position. Fun class.
